Is “eight glasses of water a day” science? How to drink water correctly?

Water is one of the six major nutrients needed by the human body, also known as the “source of life”, accounting for about 60% to 70% of the body weight. A certain amount of water needs to be added every day to maintain the normal operation of various functions in the body.

In the 2016 edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Chinese Residents, it is recommended that normal adults drink at least 1500~1700mL of water per day, which is equivalent to drinking 7~8 glasses of water per day. However, there is no standard value for the amount of water you drink in a day, which is related to each person’s environment (temperature, humidity), physical activity, physical health, and food intake. If it is in high temperature or under the conditions of physically strenuous work, the water intake needs to be increased appropriately. However, the water that the human body needs every day is not necessarily obtained by drinking water. In fact, the food we eat every day also contains water, so part of the water can also be obtained through diet.

The correct water intake should be small, frequent and consciously active, rather than waiting until thirsty to replenish. It is recommended to drink a glass of warm water after waking up in the morning to help detoxify the kidneys and liver and enhance digestion. And don’t drink too much water before going to bed at night, so as not to increase the frequency of going to the bathroom and affect the quality of sleep. After strenuous exercise, remember not to drink a lot of water immediately, it is better to drink slowly. People with stone constitution and those with kidney stones should drink more water appropriately to reduce the precipitation of urine salts.
