The deepest salt cavern gas storage in China – Jianghan salt cavern natural gas storage is officially injected

CCTV news: On June 9, Sinopec announced that the deepest salt cavern underground gas storage in China – Jianghan salt cavern natural gas storage well Wangzhu 6 was officially put into production and gas injection, with a gas injection volume of 190,000 on the first day cubic meter.

Jianghan Salt Cave Natural Gas Storage is located in Qianjiang City, Hubei Province. It is built using underground salt caverns. The wells of the gas storage are more than 2,000 meters deep. The project was officially launched in 2019, with a total designed storage capacity of 4.809 billion cubic meters. Compared with the traditional UGSs built with depleted oil and gas reservoirs, the salt-cavern UGSs have a large daily extraction capacity, less underlying gas, and flexible conversion between gas injection and gas production, which can be used for daily peak shaving and weekly peak shaving. The “Crown Prince 6” gas storage well put into production and injection this time is one of the pilot experimental wells of the first phase of the Jianghan Salt Cave Natural Gas Storage Project. The project will be fully put into production in 2026.
