The epidemic data shows that due to the rampant strain of the mutated new coronavirus Omicron, the number of new cases in a single day in South Korea exceeded 100,000 last week, and exceeded 170,000 this week. The number of deaths and severe cases of the new crown has also increased significantly.

The South Korean government predicts that the new wave of epidemics caused by Omikron may reach its peak in mid-March, and the number of new cases in a single day may reach 250,000.

Yonhap News Agency quoted South Korean health officials as saying that the government will shift the focus of epidemic prevention efforts to treating critically ill patients and preventing the death of new crown patients.

South Korea eased some epidemic prevention restrictions last week, allowing restaurants, cafes and other places to open their daily business closing hours from 21:00 to 22:00, but the maximum number of people in private gatherings remains at six. The fine-tuned anti-epidemic measures will take effect from February 19 and will be implemented until March 13. (Zheng Haoning)
