Why did he return to China to become a doctor after more than 20 years of practicing medicine in Germany?

For many years, in addition to high-intensity clinical work in Germany, collecting scientific research data and ensuring that a certain number of scientific research articles are published every year, it can be described as a double cultivation of civil and military, what kind of opportunity made him come back To Shanghai, to Jiahui?

When he first arrived in Germany, Li Jun never thought that he would stay for more than 20 years.

In 1997, Li Jun went to Germany for further study. After completing his medical doctorate at the University of Essen, he completed his residency training for 5 years and obtained the German surgical specialist license. Worked at the Royal Free Hospital, Tübingen University Hospital, Germany, and Hamburg University Hospital.

Years of accumulation have created his top surgical skills. Li Jun is one of the few surgical specialists certified by the European Council of Surgery in both hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery and liver, pancreas, and kidney transplantation. In 2018, the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery of the Affiliated Hospital of Hamburg University, led by him, became one of the five major liver surgery centers in Germany.

In the Spring Festival of 2021, Li Jun left Germany, where he lived and worked for 25 years, and joined Shanghai Jiahui International Hospital, serving as director of general surgery, director of general surgery, and director of surgical oncology.

For Li Jun, this is a new starting point in his career. He hopes to use the medical concepts and surgical techniques he brought back to help Jiahui Medical in the process of building an iconic international hospital , the pace is a little faster.

Dr. Li Jun

Go to Germany for further study

Li Jun has a unique advantage in studying medicine.

He grew up in a medical family in Shanghai. His grandmother used to be the director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of Shanghai Shuguang Hospital. His uncle was the founder of Chinese cardiology. He is an expert in medicine and a lifelong honorary professor at Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University. His father is also an experienced physician.

As the third generation of the family, three including Li Jun have inherited the medical career of their elders and have achieved good results, respectively serving as professors in well-known tertiary hospitals in Shanghai ,director.

Growing up in such an environment, Jun Li had a strong interest in medicine since childhood. “At-home gatherings are basically the same as doctors’ meetings, and the conversations are all about medicine. I often follow my mother to the medical school to attend lectures, and I have a deeper understanding of the doctor’s profession, and I want to treat diseases and save people like them.”

Driven by this original intention, after graduating from Shanghai Medical University (now Fudan University School of Medicine), he obtained a master’s degree in surgical oncology from Fudan University Affiliated Cancer Hospital.

By chance, he had a brief exchange with a visiting German professor, which opened a window for him to look at the world and changed his future medical career .

At that time, Germany had a lot of advanced surgical techniques. Li Jun remembered that, such as laparoscopic surgery and liver transplantation, these technologies were still in the exploratory stage in China at that time.

Seeing the gap in the professional field, Li Jun decided to go out for further studies. When he first arrived in Germany, Li Jun was not “acclimatized” and quickly integrated into the local life. This is also related to his character who likes to challenge. He recalled to the “medical community” that in order to obtain test data in time, he took a sleeping bag and took root in the laboratory for many days.

During his further studies in Germany, Li Jun’s doctoral supervisor was Professor Broelsch, a leading figure in the industry. He worked in many hospitals in the United States and Germany when he was young. He also admired Li Jun very much and provided him with Access to the German surgical training system.

A Surgeon’s Journey

From the very beginning, Jun Li set his sights on the most difficult and stressful field of hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery. To make this choice, even the German doctors required great courage.

“Professor Broelsch, my supervisor, wrote me a long letter, detailing the need for a transplant surgeon not only to have strong surgical skills, but also to master internal medicine, ICU, immunology , comprehensive knowledge of pharmacology, and family and spare time. The whole training process is very long, only one out of ten people can reach the end point. Because hepatobiliary surgery is the crown of general surgery, and liver transplantation is the jewel in the crown, Only a doctor at the director level or a right-hand man below can do it in Germany.”

Li Jun became the only Chinese speaker at the 2000 World Congress on Transplantation at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican

Thanks to the study experience of domestic oncology surgery, Li Jun has solid basic surgical skills. When he was still a resident, his tutor allowed him to perform the first liver resection.

Li Jun recalled: “In order to live up to the trust of the professor, before the operation, I carefully read the medical records, studied the patient’s various examination data, read medical books, and repeatedly tried to figure out the surgical skills. With careful preparation and rehearsal, the operation went well and the patient recovered well.”

In order to improve his surgical thinking, Li Jun also insisted on drawing surgical manuscripts. Before the operation starts, he will conduct a rehearsal, draw down the main points involved in the operation and the operation path, and then use different colored pens to mark out the problems and technical difficulties after the operation, so as to accumulate experience for the next operation.

Li Jun has adhered to this habit for more than 20 years, and has accumulated thousands of surgical manuscripts. For him, the process of painting is also a process of sorting out ideas in his mind, repeatedly scrutinizing steps, and summarizing and improving the level of surgery. He believes that in surgery, “talent is required, but acquired diligence is as important as the love for the medical career.”

Li Jun introduced that in Germany, doctors do not follow the normal nine-to-five, but spend their limited working time on outpatient clinics, ward rounds, operations, entering laboratories, and writing papers. . “The daily routine is basically to go out under the stars and go home under the moonlight.”

Years of accumulation have created his comprehensive surgical skills, especially in the surgical treatment of liver tumors, biliary tract tumors, pancreatic and other abdominal tumors, including reconstruction of blood vessels, bile ducts, and intestines, and conducts Minimally invasive surgery including the da Vinci robot.

In the field of scientific research, he has published research results in many international medical journals and participated in medical professional conferences in Germany, Europe and even the world. His various innovative surgeries have received high attention in the industry. In 2018, Li Jun led the surgical hepatobiliary group of the University Hospital of Hamburg to become one of the top five liver surgery centers in Germany.

He said frankly: “Surgeons will encounter challenges constantly in their careers. I am fortunate to have experienced two stages of traditional surgery and minimally invasive surgery, so I have mastered more surgical techniques. Being able to match patients with a more comfortable and appropriate type of surgery has also given me a lot of fun in surgery.”

Differences between domestic and foreign medical systems

Having been in the German medical system for a long time, Li Jun also deeply understands the differences between domestic and foreign medical systems.

The biggest difference is the medical bill payment system. Li Jun introduced that Germany is the first country in the world to establish a social medical insurance system. In Germany, doctors only need to recommend the best treatment plan for patients, and basically do not need to consider medical expenses like domestic doctors.

Germany all people must participate in social medical insurance. The hospital is positioned as a non-profit organization, and its main funding comes from government investment and insurance premiums. Medical insurance covers prevention, early diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and other aspects, as well as benefits such as sickness allowance, funeral allowance, and maternity benefits.

In addition, Germany implements a “dual-track medical treatment system”, which is similar to the hierarchical diagnosis and treatment that has been vigorously promoted in China in recent years. The patient first makes an appointment with the family doctor of the community medical department, and the community doctor arranges the consultation time according to different conditions, and decides whether to transfer to a professional hospital or a higher-level hospital.

In Germany, patients who are hospitalized require referral procedures from outpatient doctors, otherwise medical and social insurance will not be reimbursed. It is precisely because of the limitations of the referral system that ordinary patients only need to go to community hospitals to solve basic problems. Medical service problems, critically ill patients are transferred to large hospitals for hospitalization and professional treatment.

“After such a function of gatekeeping and shunting, there will be no medical waste in large hospitals, and the level of medical care in various places will become more homogeneous.” Li Jun said.

Challenge new career heights

In the Spring Festival of 2021, Li Jun officially bid farewell to Germany and came to Shanghai Jiahui International Hospital to take up the post of Director of General Surgery and Director of General Surgery.

As for this choice, Li Jun said: “This idea has been in my mind since I got the associate professorship in 2013. Our family’s tradition is to return to China after completing the studies.” It seems that returning to work in China is “another challenge”.

As the first tertiary-scale comprehensive Sino-foreign joint venture hospital in Shanghai, Shanghai Jiahui International Hospital is a pioneer in the non-public medical service system in Shanghai, as well as a Harvard University in the United States. The first cooperative project of the Massachusetts General Hospital affiliated to the University School of Medicine in China, which was put into operation in 2017, currently has 500 approved beds and over 35 departments. Cancer diagnosis and treatment is the focus of the hospital’s development.

Shanghai Jiahui International Hospital

The general surgery department under the major surgery department carries out outpatient diagnosis and treatment and operation work by senior surgeons in charge of surgery. Configured to provide patients with surgical medical services that meet international professional standards.

This is also what impresses and attracts Li Jun. “The standards here are world-class, similar to the practice environment I had in Germany, and the ‘patient-centred’ philosophy is not just a slogan, but is implemented throughout every clinic in every department.”

After coming to Shanghai, Li Jun led the surgical team of Jiahui International Hospital to grow rapidly. At present, there are two foreign Chinese doctors and 11 attending physicians from top domestic tertiary hospitals, covering the different needs of Chinese and foreign patients.

With the support of Jiahui’s Department of Internal Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology and Pediatrics, Li Jun has carried out a series of complex and difficult operations, combined with Jiahui’s domestic and international resources, to provide the most patients with the most Appropriate treatment options, including helping some patients avoid unnecessary surgery.

At the same time, he created a number of joint specialty outpatient clinics with multiple departments in the hospital, and launched rapid rehabilitation services. “From the moment of admission to the completion of the operation, there will be rehabilitation nurses who will intervene before and after the operation. I hope to provide full-chain care of the medical service process as soon as possible and relieve the physical pain of patients in the shortest time.”

This is also an embodiment of “patient-centered” in Li Jun’s mind. He hopes that Jiahui’s surgical team can advance in clinical research and conduct more scientific research exchanges with public tertiary hospitals, so that Jiahui Surgery can go beyond the ordinary model of private hospitals and expand to higher and wider business fields.

Li Jun communicates with peers at the academic conference

“As a doctor, no matter in a public hospital or a private hospital, the most important thing is to pursue professional skills. I also want to share more experience and experience with more young and middle-aged people. Doctor.”

After working in China for more than a year, Li Jun feels more real. With the recent development of minimally invasive surgery, the scope and methods of surgical services are constantly being updated. Learning at home or abroad will make progress.”
