The 520.77-kilometer Beijing Great Wall, with the Ming Great Wall as the main body, passes through Pinggu, Miyun, Huairou, Changping, The six districts of Yanqing and Mentougou are the most well-preserved, most valuable, most complex and culturally rich sections in the country.

In the 1960s and 1970s, the Great Wall suffered serious damage. Some cultural relics protection experts were heartbroken and strongly called for the protection of the Great Wall. In 1984, the Beijing Municipal People’s Government announced the entire Beijing section of the Great Wall as a city-level cultural relics protection unit.

Since 2000, Beijing has carried out nearly 100 Great Wall protection projects.

With the announcement of the “Beijing Great Wall Cultural Belt Protection and Development Plan (2018-2035)”, the Conservation and repair efforts have been further intensified. The plan proposes that by 2035, through means such as emergency rescue and daily maintenance, Beijing will realize that the Great Wall itself and its carriers will be free of danger across the board. In order to achieve this goal, starting from 2019, Beijing will promote 10 rescue and reinforcement projects of the Great Wall every year. As of June this year, Beijing has organized and implemented 50 emergency and reinforcement projects for the Great Wall.

In 2021, in order to further strengthen the research on the protection of the Great Wall, solve the technical and financial problems encountered in the implementation of the Great Wall protection project, and protect the Great Wall. The establishment of the Restoration Practice Base was an opportunity, and Beijing shifted the focus of its work from a general protection project of the Great Wall to a research-based restoration project.

Research repairs mainly include four parts: archaeology, design investigation, formulation of design plans, and construction. Compared with the previous renovation projects, the research-based renovation will focus on strengthening scientific research before construction, using scientific and technological means, adding archaeological forces, collecting more scientific data, and using digital technology to deduce diseases.
