“We can’t see the manuscript in advance”, sign language interpreter Tang Wenyan “hands” Shanghai

“At this moment, there is such a group of people, their fingertips are flipped, sonorous and powerful, they are using a special language to promote anti-epidemic knowledge, ‘hand’ to protect Shanghai!”

At the Shanghai Epidemic Prevention and Control Conference on March 17, Wu Jinglei, director of the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission, head of the Shanghai New Coronary Pneumonia Medical Treatment Expert Team, Huashan Zhang Wenhong, director of the hospital’s infectious disease department, was present, and the golden sentences continued, which greatly increased the confidence of Shanghai citizens in fighting the epidemic at this stage.

The 125th session will be held in Shanghai on March 17th The press conference on epidemic prevention and control work

The audience felt that “Sister Sign Language” should be the “first grade”. After all, “Director Zhang speaks fast and doesn’t play cards according to the routine”. It’s really hard to translate.

A reporter from Xinmin Weekly contacted Tang Wenyan, a sign language interpreter and a sign language interpreter from the Shanghai Disabled Persons’ Federation.

“Director Wu and Dr. Zhang kept saying the same, so it can be seen that they did not read it according to the script. For example, Dr. Zhang said, ‘Many people say Ct value, In fact, many people don’t know what CT is at all, and they think they go to the hospital to take a CT’ and so on. This requires a master of on-the-spot translation. Is it more difficult to translate in real time in sign language?”

Tang Wenyan believes that direct translation on the spot really tests the translator’s usual knowledge reserve and on-the-spot reaction ability. She told reporters that this was the fourth press conference on epidemic prevention and control she participated in this year. “I participated in five games last year, and more in 2020.” Tang Wenyan said, “No matter which epidemic conference is held, our team cannot see the manuscript in advance, that is to say, whether it is on the spot or not, for translation, It is a direct translation every time. Of course, no matter which language, sufficient pre-translation preparation can appropriately reduce the difficulty of translation.”

Tang Wenyan has participated in sign language interpretation on many occasions

Shanghai famous Lawyer Zhang Yuxia said this about her sign language teacher Tang Wenyan: “The fluency is quite amazing!” , In 2004, when he was a sophomore in the Department of Special Education of East China Normal University, he became acquainted with sign language. At that time, when she saw that Shanghai Oriental International Sign Language Education School was recruiting students, she signed up because she had always been interested in sign language.

After graduating from graduate school in 2010, Tang Wenyan became a full-time sign language interpreter despite her family’s objections.

In the Shanghai Book Fair and other occasions, the public has already seen her style. From the perspective of sign language translation, translation in medical situations such as anti-epidemic is still different from daily translation. The biggest difference is nothing but the application of medical vocabulary. Tang Wenyan said: “Medical care is a professional field, we need to learn, especially some professional terms.”

Translation of Shanghai Disabled Persons’ Federation For the team, Tang Wenyan and her partners did not use the professional terminology of sign language mechanically, but communicated with disabled friends in advance after mastering the professional terminology. “There are some words that are not commonly used in the life of deaf people, and there may not be a fixed way of playing, which needs to be confirmed with the deaf community.”

What should be taken care of in translation for disabled persons without professional medical knowledge?

Tang Wenyan said: “When I translate, I will pay attention to express the meaning more clearly according to the acceptance of the audience, not just literal After all, the core of translation is to translate meaning.”

On March 15, volunteers organized nucleic acid sampling samples at Shanghai Baoteng Medical Laboratory: Xinhua News Agency

After the show , at 1:00 p.m., Tang Wenyan forwarded a WeChat draft titled “‘Hands’ protect Shanghai, let’s act together”. One of the texts reads like this –

“At this moment, there is a group of people who turn their fingertips, sonorous and forceful, We are using a special language to promote anti-epidemic knowledge, ‘hand’ to protect Shanghai!”

There is no doubt that Tang Wenyan is a “hand” “One of the backbones of protecting Shanghai. During the epidemic, Tang Wenyan said this to disabled friends and ordinary citizens-

“Everyone needs to not spread rumors, do not believe in rumors, and pay attention to the official In her eyes, the able-bodied and the disabled, “we are all the same”. She also took care of disabled friends: “Disabled partners will need more barrier-free support, such as information barrier-free for the deaf, SMS alarms, etc. Everyone also needsAccumulate more information channels and help channels in peacetime. In this way, when an emergency occurs, you can find the person for help in time when you need help. ”
