Dandruff is closely related to stratum corneum dysfunction and is mostly thought to be caused by Malassezia fungal infection. Malassezia is a lipophilic fungus that is the normal flora of the scalp. If Malassezia thrives in large numbers, it will produce free fatty acids that penetrate into the stratum corneum and disrupt the skin barrier. In addition, dry scalp is another cause of dandruff.
