“Five highs” or “one high”, there are risks

Deputy Chief Physician Chen Guofang of the Department of Endocrinology, Jiangsu Provincial Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine told reporters that the “five-high population” refers to those suffering from high blood sugar, high blood pressure, high blood lipids, high body weight, and hyperuricemia.

Excessive obesity is generally accompanied by increases in blood sugar, blood lipids, blood pressure and blood uric acid, which is called metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome refers to a large category of syndromes, which means that the hormone levels and endocrine regulation functions in the patient’s body are in a disordered state, so the “five highs” often occur simultaneously or successively in the same person. However, these metabolic abnormalities, whether they exist alone or in combination, can cause damage to target organs such as the brain, heart, and kidneys, increase the risk of stroke, coronary heart disease, renal insufficiency and other diseases, and even endanger life.

From 2021 to 2022, the Endocrinology Department of Jiangsu Provincial Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine will open the five-high outpatient clinic and the diabetes reversal outpatient clinic, specifically targeting overweight and obesity “five-high” people, as well as people with type 2 diabetes and prediabetes , a multidisciplinary expert team composed of endocrinology, cardiology, nutrition, sports rehabilitation, clinical pharmacy, and health education specialists, providing integrated diagnosis and treatment services.

Through the intervention of diet, exercise, drugs, etc., the weight of overweight or obese patients can be significantly reduced on the original basis, thereby solving various diseases caused by obesity. Some patients with high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes can even achieve the effect of maintaining blood sugar and blood pressure within the normal range by using less or no medication by losing weight.

Beware of “patriarchal” hyperuricemia

During the physical examination, many people panicked when faced with the arrow of uric acid exceeding the standard. Some people do not have high blood pressure, high blood lipids, etc., but have already developed hyperuricemia. According to statistics, there are about 200 million people with hyperuricemia in China, which is characterized by high prevalence, younger age, higher males than females, and higher coastal areas than inland areas.

Gout caused by high uric acid is “ten times worse than toothache”. I don’t know if you noticed, but most of the people who suffer from gout are men. Surveys show that 95% of gout occurs in men. Why? “Beer crayfish, gout is delivered to home,” Chen Guofang said. Men prefer to drink alcohol and eat foods rich in purines and proteins, while estrogen in women can promote the excretion of uric acid by the kidneys and inhibit the onset of arthritis.

Experts point out that gout is just the tip of the iceberg of hyperuricemia. Studies have shown that hyperuricemia is closely related to cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease, and is an independent risk factor for these diseases.

To prevent hyperuricemia, we must first control the factors of obesity. It is especially important to keep your mouth shut, open your legs, and actively control your weight. Patients with hyperuricemia often coexist with overweight, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. Avoid high-purine foods and stay away from alcohol. Drink more water on weekdays, and ensure that you drink more than 2,000 ml of water every day. It is best to drink plain water to help expel uric acid.
