Taiwan’s new crown pneumonia cases are on the rise again. Today (May 24), there are 82,363 new local cases. There were 251 cases of moderate and severe cases (including 198 cases of moderate disease and 53 cases of severe cases), and 42 new deaths among the confirmed cases; and 72 cases of imported cases. Zhou Zhihao, head of the “command center” epidemic monitoring team, said that there are more local cases today than during the holiday, but they are similar to last week.

Today, there were 82,363 new local cases, 39,116 males and 43,212 females. The 35 cases under investigation were between the ages of under 5 and over 90. Among the 42 new deaths reported in Taiwan today, one more child died, a 10-year-old boy announced a few days ago. Luo Yijun, deputy head of the medical response team of Taiwan’s “epidemic command center”, said that the cumulative number of child deaths has reached five.

The 42 deaths ranged from their 10s to their 90s, 22 were over 80, 39 had a history of chronic disease, and 16 were unvaccinated. One of the cases was a severely ill 10-year-old boy announced on May 22.

The boy had no history of chronic disease and presented with encephalitis and multiple organ abnormalities. The case began to develop symptoms such as fever, dizziness, and vomiting on May 13. When he went to the clinic for medical treatment on the same day, the evaluation was good and he returned home for recuperation. The next day, he had a change in consciousness and was tested positive for the rapid test. Combined with muscle pumping, he was rushed to the emergency room. The temperature was as high as 40.1. It was found that there was mild pneumonia in the lung image, severe cerebral edema and arrhythmia, decreased blood oxygen, etc. were found in the head computed tomography. Emergency intubation was sent to the intensive care unit to find abnormal multi-organ indexes. Remdesivir and neurological drugs were used for treatment. Died on May 18.

Luo Yijun said that a total of 14 children were seriously ill. After review, it was determined that there were 5 deaths related to new coronary pneumonia, including 4 cases of encephalitis and 1 case of death at home. After forensic research, it was judged to be new coronary pneumonia.

Another case was a male in his 20s, who was not vaccinated, had neurological diseases, and died of respiratory failure after infection.

Of the 53 severe cases, 17 were not vaccinated. One of the cases was in his 20s, had a neurological condition, was on a long-term respirator, and had received a single dose of the vaccine.
