Sudden back thigh pain after running, watch out for hamstring injury

What is a hamstring injury?

The hamstrings are muscles in the back of the thigh that can be damaged when stretched too much, too quickly, or with too much force, sometimes causing the muscle to tear.

Hamstring injuries can also occur when the hamstrings are torn or overstretched. Tendons are strong bands of tissue that connect muscles to bones. Hamstring injuries often occur during running or exercising. What are the symptoms? A hamstring injury can cause sudden back thigh pain. Occasionally a “pop” is felt when the injury occurs. The injury can also cause elevated skin temperature or ecchymosis on the back of the thigh. Need to be checked? Probably not needed. By knowing the symptoms and doing a physical examination, the healthcare provider should be able to tell if there is a hamstring injury. But some patients need other tests. Health care workers will order imaging tests, such as ultrasound or MRI scans, based on symptoms. Imaging tests can create images of the body. How to treat? A hamstring injury usually gets better on its own, but it may take weeks to months for full healing. The healing period depends on the patient’s age, health, and the extent of the injury. The following measures can help relieve symptoms: Abstain from activities or exercises that cause pain until symptoms improve – but can continue other exercises and activities that do not cause pain or worsen injury. Elevate the affected limb with a pillow or chair while resting – this is only useful for the first few days after the injury. Ice the injured area – place a cold pack on the area for 15 minutes at a time, once every 1-2 hours, and place a thin towel between the cold object and the skin. Ice should be applied for at least 6 hours after the injury, and sometimes even up to 2 days after the injury can still help. Wrap the thigh muscle with an elastic bandage (below), other type of wrap, or a cloth sheath to help support the muscle. Use pain medication – Your doctor may prescribe strong pain medication for severe pain or severe hamstring injury. If the hamstring injury is not severe, over-the-counter medications such as acetaminophen [brand names: Tylenol] or ibuprofen [brand names: Advil, Motrin] can be used. After the pain is relieved, gentle stretching and exercise of the hamstrings can help strengthen the muscles and prevent them from becoming too stiff. The hamstrings must be healed before performing sports or other activities that require the use of the muscles, otherwise the hamstrings are likely to be injured again. How to prevent it? Preventative measures include warming up your muscles before exercising, such as walking or doing other light activities.
