People who are often dry and thirsty, don’t be careless! Beware of these diseases

Rapid Inspection!

Did you drink water well today? Do you feel dry mouth?

But sometimes, even after drinking a lot of water, I still feel dry and thirsty. Why and what should I do?

1. Too salty

Heavy salt and spicy hot pot and boiled fish for relaxation on weekends, weird-flavored beans, potato chips, Jiuzhi plum meat and other snacks for office work, bean paste for bibimbap , chili sauce, are high-sodium foods that make us dry and thirsty [1].

2. Not drinking water in time after strenuous exercise

Sweating profusely after prolonged strenuous exercise or heavy physical exertion without timely hydration can lead to thirst.

3. Fever, diarrhea

When you have a fever or diarrhea, you also lose water in your body, and you may feel thirsty.

4. Take medication

Long-term use of some drugs, such as antidepressants amitriptyline, imipramine, etc., antihypertensive drugs clonidine, prazosin, etc., will also cause symptoms of dry mouth and thirst[ 2].

5. Suffering from oral disease

Such as mumps or oral gland stones, it may also induce symptoms of dry mouth and thirst.

In addition, if middle-aged and elderly people are often thirsty, it may be due to the atrophy of salivary glands and the reduction of saliva secretion with the deterioration of body functions, resulting in dry mouth; dry mouth in pregnant women Also common.

Dry mouth in the above cases, as long as you drink more water[3], or prescribe the right medicine, the thirst will basically disappear after the symptoms are cured or relieved.

(If you are sure that you are “shot”, you can pull down to the last part and check the drinking water guide that Zhimei made for you).

But if dry mouth has nothing to do with any of these causes, it could be a sign of some systemic disease!

1. Diabetes

If you find that you are constantly thirsty, your urine output increases for no reason, you lose weight for no reason, and you are also accompanied by unrelieved fatigue, you must check to rule out the possibility of diabetes [4].

2. Sjögren’s Syndrome

This disease is caused by immune cells attacking and destroying their own secretory glands, resulting in gland atrophy and decreased secretory function, resulting in various dry symptoms in the body.

If it lasts for more than 3 months, you will feel dry mouth and eyes every day (even with repeated “sand” blowing into the eyes), dry and itchy skin, usually need to drink water frequently , repeated or persistent enlargement of the parotid gland, rampant caries (about 50% of patients with Sjögren’s syndrome will have multiple caries that are difficult to control and develop, manifested as teeth gradually blackening, then small pieces fall off, and finally only residual roots remain), etc., It is necessary to pay attention to this disease [5].

3. Blood disorders

Iron-deficiency anemia, pernicious anemia, or megaloblastic anemia due to vitamin B deficiency may lead to atrophic glossitis with symptoms such as decreased salivation [6,8].

4. Mental illness

Some patients with depression and anxiety disorders may experience conscious dry mouth due to long-term medication or psychological factors.(I don’t actually have dry mouth, but due to psychological factors, I always feel that my mouth is dry), even when I eat, I feel that I need to drink some water to swallow [7].

In addition to these factors, diseases such as diabetes insipidus, benign lymphoepithelial lesions, primary biliary cirrhosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, candidiasis, and sleep apnea are all common May cause dry mouth.

In addition, some cancers may also have symptoms of dry mouth, but you don’t need to panic or draw conclusions because of dry mouth, because cancer is often accompanied by other symptoms (such as Masses, weight loss, fever of unknown origin, etc.), also need a series of tests to confirm the diagnosis.

1. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink

Thirsty is already a signal that the body is obviously dehydrated, so in daily life, we should drink water at any time, and don’t wait until we are thirsty to drink water[1] .

2. Drink enough water

Healthy adults should drink 1500-1700 ml per day (about 7-8 cups in disposable paper cups), and if they sweat a lot, they should drink more [1].

3. Drink these waters to quench your thirst

The best choice for drinking water is plain water, If you don’t like tasteless water, you can also drink it:

Light tea

Adults can replace some boiled water with light tea (such as green tea, white tea, black tea), but pay attention to drinking less strong tea.

Mixed grains and beans in water

Soaking barley, soaking buckwheat in water, and boiling mung bean soup are also good choices for “people who don’t like drinking water”, remember to leave out or reduce sugar!

Fruit Soak

Kumquats, lemons, and limes are washed, sliced, and soaked in water (no or less sugar).

Also, stop drinking sodas or other sweet drinks when you’re thirsty! They cause the body to lose more water and even make you thirstier the more you drink.

Drinking water may seem like a small thing in our busy lives, but it is actually a big thing that is closely related to our health.

Cultivate a good habit of drinking water, so that you can stay away from the small trouble of frequent thirst and live a healthier life.

Pick up the water glass and take a sip~
