Xinwang February 24th News (Chief Reporter Cong Li) Airway foreign bodies are the common peanuts, melon seeds, soybeans, corn kernels, fish bones, etc. that are mistakenly inhaled into the trachea and enter the bronchus or its deep part. According to statistics, nearly 50,000 children die each year due to accidental injuries in my country, of which nearly 3,000, or 6%, die from airway foreign body obstruction and suffocation. Recently, Xiaoyu (pseudonym), who lives in Chengyang, suddenly developed a cough when her family was feeding peanuts. The 1-year-old Xiaoyu coughed for more than ten minutes and spat out some peanut residues. Afterwards, the child continued to cough repeatedly and had abnormal noises when breathing. The parents immediately took him to the Children’s Emergency Department of Peking University People’s Hospital Qingdao Hospital (Qingdao Women’s and Children’s Hospital Chengyang Branch).

Since choking a foreign body by mistake is an emergency, the medical staff immediately opened a green channel for the treatment of children’s airway foreign body, and prioritized Xiaoyu for treatment according to the three-level triage of pre-examination and triage.

The visiting doctor asked the child’s medical history, perfected chest CT, reconstructed the airway, and identified the location of the foreign body. It was found that there was a foreign body in Xiaoyu’s left bronchus.

The foreign body in the trachea and bronchus is a potentially life-threatening emergency. After crying or coughing, the child may move with the airflow at any time, especially if it is incarcerated at the glottis, it will quickly cause difficulty in breathing and suffocation. Life, early diagnosis and removal of foreign bodies are the keys to reducing complications and mortality. In order to improve the efficiency of treatment, the emergency department has opened a green channel to create a “golden” rescue channel for foreign bodies in the trachea and bronchus.

The receiving doctor immediately organizes a consultation with the rescue team, activates the emergency plan, and performs emergency surgery for the child.

Children’s critical care needs “speed”, and the children’s emergency department, endoscopy room, anesthesiology department, and laboratory department are quickly assembled. It only took Xiaoyu more than 2 hours to come to the hospital, and all the links such as consultation, chest CT, diagnosis, nucleic acid testing, anesthesia, and surgery were completed in one go. The endoscopist successfully removed peanut fragments from his bronchus, and then Xiaoyu was transferred to the pediatrics ward. At present, the child has recovered and been discharged from the hospital and has returned to his former liveliness.

Children’s emergency at Chengyang Hospital of Qingdao Women’s and Children’s Hospital reminded: Nuts are the most common foreign bodies in the airway. Avoid making children laugh while eating, and keep children away from small blocks and other dangerous objects. Once the child has an airway foreign body, please go to the hospital immediately to avoid delaying the disease.
