National Health Commission: 65% of critically ill patients are elderly people over 60 years old, of which 65% have not been vaccinated

This afternoon (March 15), the Joint Prevention and Control Mechanism of the State Council held a press conference.

At the meeting, Jiao Yahui, director of the National Health and Medical Commission’s Medical Administration and Hospital Administration Bureau, introduced that according to current statistics, about 65% of critically ill patients are elderly people over 60 years old. 80% of these seriously ill elderly people over 60 years old have underlying diseases. Among older adults with the severe type, 65% were not vaccinated. This is also why the state advocates that the elderly, especially the elderly, should be vaccinated in time, which is a clinically observed situation.

For the elderly, Chinese medical experts have explored a very important experience through two years of practice, that is, “moving the barrier forward”, setting up “sub-ICU” for the elderly with high risk factors. “In the ward, when they did not enter the intensive care unit, they were admitted to the “sub-ICU” ward. The oxygen supply conditions, monitoring conditions and medical strength of this ward are better than those of ordinary wards, and at the same time, there are not as many rescue instruments and equipment as in the intensive care unit. In the “sub-ICU” ward, the ratio of medical and nursing staff is higher than that of the general ward, and the focus is on strengthening the monitoring of the changes of the elderly’s condition, especially the changes in blood oxygen saturation. The purpose of setting up the “sub-ICU” ward is to block the progress of their disease in the “sub-ICU” ward, so that they will no longer enter the ICU ward for treatment.
