Man coughed for two years and worried about lung cancer

Changjiang Daily Wuhan Client May 19th (Correspondent Liu Shanshan) The 43-year-old Mr. Zhao has been coughing intermittently for the past two years. Thinking of the family history of cancer, he was worried that he had lung cancer. Hospital inspection, did not expect the culprit is actually a piece of pepper peel.

Mr. Zhao is (surnamed) 43 years old this year. Since two years ago, he has started coughing, because he is still young. Seriously. Until some time ago, Mr. Zhao coughed so badly that his chest hurt, and he couldn’t sleep at night. Thinking that a relative at home was only diagnosed with lung cancer last year, and worried that he would also have a tumor, he rushed to the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine of Wuhan Central Hospital for treatment.

After lung CT examination, there was a tumor at the opening of the posterior basal segment of his right lower lobe, but the tumor could not be completely ruled out. Later, Zhu Shan, deputy chief physician of the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, found through bronchoscopy that there was granulation tissue in the lower lobe of the right lung blocking the lumen. The doctor carefully removed the granulation tissue and found a foreign body embedded in it. The doctor judged that Mr. Zhao’s previous cough symptoms were caused by the foreign body blocking the trachea. Because the foreign body remains in the bronchi for a long time, the local granulation tissue hyperplasia is obvious due to long-term inflammatory stimulation. Deputy Chief Physician Zhu Shan used the foreign body forceps to continuously adjust to find a suitable angle, and finally took out the foreign body quickly. When I took it out, it turned out to be a piece of pepper peel.

The peeled pepper.

After the tumor was ruled out, Mr. Zhao breathed a sigh of relief. He recalled that two years ago, he had a meal with friends every day for a period of time. Every time he drank it, he went home. He didn’t know when the pepper peeled into his lungs. The doctor analyzed that when the foreign body choked into the trachea, it would reflexively cause severe coughing. It is very likely that the patient was eating and chatting while chatting with friends at that time, and accidentally choked the pepper peel into his lungs.

Respiratory and critical care medicine specialists are making rounds.

Hu Yi, director of the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine at the hospital, introduced that foreign bodies in the trachea are not uncommon. Besides pepper peels, the most common foreign bodies in the trachea are chicken bones, fish bones, melon seeds, peanuts, Beans, etc., and even coins, pen caps, etc. Because adults have sound chewing function and laryngeal reflex function, it is generally not easy for foreign bodies to enter the tracheobronchial trachea, but it is easy to occur if eating too fast, laughing loudly, or inhaling and vomiting when drunk. Once the large foreign body completely blocks the trachea, it can cause suffocation, which is life-threatening. If the foreign body is not removed from the airway for a long time, granulation tissue proliferation and wrapping around the foreign body will occur, and obstructive pneumonia will occur.

Experts remind that when eating, try to chew and swallow slowly, and don’t laugh loudly, so as to prevent food from entering the trachea and causing discomfort such as choking. Special attention should be paid to children, the elderly, and people with swallowing difficulties. If you have chronic cough for a long time, you should go to the hospital for related examinations in time. If no foreign body is found in CT examination, it is recommended to do bronchoscopy to find out the cause.
