Liao Qingfu, 55, lives in Zhoutang Village, Huaping Town, Jianshi County. When he was two months old, he accidentally fell into a brazier and suffered severe burns, causing facial disfigurement, blindness in his left eye, and a congenital high degree of myopia in the right eye. For many years, with the only sight left in his right eye, he was barely able to take care of himself. However, in February this year, his right eye suddenly disappeared.
“I’m very scared. I’m worried that I will become blind.” Liao Qingfu was very nervous.
Accompanied by his niece, Liao Qingfu came to a local hospital for treatment and was diagnosed with retinal detachment in his right eye. Due to the difficulty of the operation, the doctor suggested that he go to the ophthalmology department of the State Central Hospital to have a look.
On February 25, Liao Qingfu came to the ophthalmology center of the State Central Hospital, and the director and chief physician of the ophthalmology center Wu Qingsong received the consultation.
After a detailed examination, Wu Qingsong found that Liao Qingfu’s condition was not optimistic: due to the facial disfigurement in his childhood, his eyes were severely deformed, the left eyeball was atrophied, the right eye had retinal detachment, and the height was super high. Nearsightedness, only a few fingers. At the same time, the right eye also suffered from senile cataract, cicatricial ectropion.
“The detached retina can only be repaired by surgery to preserve the remaining vision of the right eye. But the operation is very difficult.” Wu Qingsong introduced that the patient’s right eyelid was severely adhered, and it was very difficult to open the eyelid. The above patient has super high myopia, and the retinal surgery is complicated, difficult and risky. What’s more, this is the patient’s only remaining eye, and if the operation fails, the patient will be completely blind.

Liao Qingfu’s parents have passed away, his brother is farming, his sister is sick, and his family is not well-off. Due to physical disability, Liao Qingfu has yet to get married and lives on subsistence allowances.
After Wu Qingsong made a special report on Liao Qingfu’s illness and family situation to the Secretary of the Party Committee of the State Central Hospital, doctoral tutor, and a leading medical talent in Hubei Province, Professor Li Tuo, Li Tuo immediately stated that he was the chief surgeon and did his best to perform the surgery. Every effort is made to protect the patient’s eyes.

After careful preparation before surgery, on March 3, Li Tuo performed “23G vitrectomy + gas-liquid exchange + intraocular photocoagulation + silicone oil filling” for Liao Qingfu. During the operation, Li Tuo overcame many difficulties, such as the patient’s eyelid adhesions, the long eye axis caused by super high myopia, the poor operation of general surgical instruments and the narrow operating space, and the operation was a complete success.

On March 4, Li Tuo slowly lifted the gauze on Liao Qingfu’s eyes. “I finally see the light again!” As the eyes slowly brightened, Liao Qingfu, who was originally unhappy, stretched his brows and spoke more.
“I don’t need help, I can see it, I can walk by myself.” On the way to the examination room, Liao Qingfu smiled and declined the help of the nursing staff and walked slowly.
Examinations showed that Liao Qingfu’s vision in his right eye was greatly improved. Li Tuo said that with the later rehabilitation care, his vision will be further improved, which can meet the needs of future life.
