No water, no road, no esophagus!

In the 1950s and 1960s, Linxian County (now Linzhou City) in Henan had the “title” of three impossibility.

Among them, esophageal obstruction refers to esophageal cancer, which is known locally as choking diaphragm disease and choking disease. There is even a throat temple in the local area, which is a special temple for throat cancer patients to pray for recovery.

At that time, almost one out of every three or five people in Lin County suffered from esophageal cancer, which was one of the areas with the highest incidence of esophageal cancer in China.

From 1974 to 1976, a large survey showed that the incidence of esophageal cancer in Lin County was 6 times that of the whole country. Even chickens have a particularly high incidence of esophageal cancer in this place. Experts speculate that there is a problem with the environment or diet. It is conceivable that people living in Lin County have had a hard time.

In order to explore the real culprit of the high incidence of esophageal cancer in Linxian, Henan, Lu Shixin, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, who was still 42 years old at the time, went into the small county town in the Taihang Mountains without hesitation.

1. With sauerkraut for scientific research, he discovered the real culprit of esophageal cancer!

In 1971, Lu Shixin went to Lin County. For every 3-5 people, there is one serious case of esophageal cancer. Lu Shixin determined to find carcinogens from drinking water and food. He led the team through muddy, steep mountain roads and marked nearly 5,000 wells. Countless tests are carried out on saliva, gastric juice, urine, various grains, sauerkraut and other substances.

Using the most “stupid” method to collect data in places where patients gather, this adherence is 15 years.

In 1978, Lu Shixin and his colleagues finally found the carcinogen – nitrosamine. Back then, this substance was quite foreign to the world. Lu Shixin proved to the whole world that nitrosamines can induce tumors in animals through a large number of experimental solutions. And this substance comes from the transformation of nitrite contained in sauerkraut, which the locals like.In summer, the locals even drink the fermented vegetable juice as a drink.

Afterwards, Lu Shixin summed up “five anti-cancer measures” based on solid theoretical basis – anti-mildew, deamine, control hyperplasia, apply molybdenum fertilizer, and change bad living habits . After decades of implementation, mold and nitrosamines in the Lin County environment have dropped dramatically, and the incidence of esophageal cancer has been cut in half.

Second, esophageal cancer is a big problem in Henan and China!

Unfortunately, Academician Lu Shixin passed away in 2019. At present, Henan and even the whole of China is still a high-incidence area of esophageal cancer.

According to Henan University of Science and Technology School of Medicine Dean Gao Shegan, there are 570,000 patients with esophageal cancer every year in the world, and as many as in China >258,000, and the incidence was regionally distributed, concentrated in Henan and Hebei, and the local incidence was 100 times higher than the global level.

Why does esophageal cancer prefer Henan and Chinese people?

1. Unbalanced diet and low intake of fresh fruits and vegetables

The main carcinogenic risk factor for esophageal cancer is nitrosamines and its precursors and certain fungi, while cured foods and red meat are also associated with esophageal cancer risk. Fruit intake is a protective factor for the incidence of esophageal cancer. People with insufficient consumption of fruits lack a protective mechanism for the esophageal mucosa and are more vulnerable to injury.

2. Love tobacco and alcohol

Studies have shown that heavy drinkers have a significantly higher risk of developing esophageal cancer. A meta-analysis showed that smoking and alcohol consumption can synergistically increase the risk of triggering. There is an old saying, “Chinese flue-cured tobacco is in Henan, and Xuchang tobacco leaves are the best in Henan.” Henan is a major tobacco-growing province, and there are relatively many smokers, resulting in a relatively concentrated incidence of disease.

3. Poor oral hygiene

The survey found that residents in high-incidence areas of esophageal cancer generally have poor oral hygiene, caries or missing teeth, and bacteria in the oral cavity. Breeding, high levels of nitrosamines, increase the risk of cancer.

4. Weak awareness of physical examination

Chronic esophagitis, leukoplakia, and reflux esophagitis are all precancerous diseases of esophagus, although these The disease itself is not malignant, but because the patient does not establish correct health awareness, does not actively treat the disease, or does not take it seriously because the disease is mild, eventually the disease is delayed and gradually deteriorated.

Third, remember these symptoms and do gastroscopy early!

If you feel any of the following discomforts while eating, it is likely to be an early symptom of esophageal cancer and should not be ignored.

1. Difficulty swallowing

Difficulty swallowing while eating is an obvious early manifestation of esophageal cancer. When swallowing food, no matter how finely chewed it is, it is difficult to swallow, even if it is liquid food, it is difficult to swallow. I always feel like food is stuck in my esophagus, not going up or down.

2. Foreign body sensation when swallowing

In addition to dysphagia, foreign body sensation in swallowed food is also an early symptom of esophageal cancer. Especially eating some dry and hard food, this discomfort will be more obvious.

3. Chest pain

When eating or drinking, the patient will feel a dull pain in the chest. Pain and tightness in the chest caused by the squirming of food.

4. Epigastric pain, bloating

In addition to chest pain, the upper abdomen that is closely connected to the digestive tract will also feel pain and discomfort, even if there is no pain in the upper abdomen I also feel full when I eat. Especially eating hard and dry food, the discomfort in the upper abdomen can increase to be unbearable.

Understanding the risk factors and symptoms of esophageal cancer, you can better plan preventive measures. But prevention alone is not enough. For high-risk groups such as those over 40 years old, with a family history of esophageal cancer, and long-term smoking and drinking, endoscopy should also be performed once a year. With the current screening methods, gastroscope is one of the best methods for esophageal cancer screening, especially for small early esophageal cancer, which can also hide early.

Of course, whether it is esophageal cancer or other diseases, if you want to reduce the risk, you must develop good living habits and maintain a regular and healthy diet. Instead of waiting until you are sick, you can start avoiding food.
