German doctor Evelyn uses “remote free clinic” to protect her “home”

Evelyn said that as a doctor, I hope both Chinese and foreigners living in Shanghai can realize that China and the world are an organism.

Jewish-German Evelyne Bischof has lived in Shanghai for 11 years. She likes to drink tap water like a Chinese. , I like to sit around a round table to eat, I like the fireworks in the streets and alleys.

Like many enthusiastic foreign friends, Evelyn actively participated in this round of anti-epidemic in Shanghai. However, her way of participation is rather special—not as a volunteer, but by giving full play to her professional advantages as a doctor of medicine, answering questions for Shanghai citizens seeking medical advice, and calming their minds. At the same time, during the lockdown period, Evelyn was also moved by the help of the neighbors.

“Shanghai is my home. When the outbreak first broke out in Wuhan, I came back to China from abroad to help, and now I have to stick to it,” she said.

“I’m Going Home”

Eve Lin’s connection with China began in 2008. In 2011, Evelyn went to teach at Tongji University School of Medicine and has made Shanghai her home since then.

She clearly remembers that on a flight to China in February 2020, she was the only foreign face on the plane. At the time, she had just finished attending a conference in Europe. Facing the doubts of others, she said, “I want to go home.”

Evelyn has not left China for more than two years. In addition to working in the Internal Medicine Department of Renji Hospital, she also teaches at Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine and Shanghai Medical and Health University, and is also very concerned about the research, diagnosis and treatment of the new coronavirus, and has published related papers in the Swiss Medical Journal.

After the outbreak of the new crown epidemic in Shanghai this spring, thanks to professional knowledge reserves and cautious personality, Iraqi Before the implementation of global static management in the city, Fulin had stocked up food, daily necessities, and fitness equipment that could meet her needs for several weeks at home.

“The new crown is definitely not a big flu.” Although many people abroad are less vigilant about the new crown virus, Evelyn disagrees very much. “On the one hand, China has a large population. Even if the mortality rate of the Omicron strain is low, its absolute number is still unbearable for the world. On the other hand, the long-term symptoms of infection with the new coronavirus are gradually emerging around the world, The medical community is still working on relevant research.”

Therefore, Evelyn not only paid extra attention to protection herself, but also tried to persuade her foreign friends to actively cooperate with the epidemic prevention requirements. Whenever a nucleic acid test is carried out in the community, she tries her best to keep a distance of more than 2 meters from others when queuing, and chooses to walk down from the 18th floor most of the time.

To this, Evelyn quipped that it was her workout time.

Remote Free Clinic during Lockdown

During Lockdown , Evelyn was not idle either. Since it is more inconvenient for citizens to seek medical treatment than usual, Evelyn started free remote consultation online, and tried her best to provide professional judgment and advice to those who seek her consultation.

“Some people have broken their arms, some people have a sudden arrhythmia, some people have children with sudden allergies, and even pregnant women come to consult… In special times, It’s easy to get nervous, but it’s important to help them decide whether they really need to go to the hospital and, if they can, practical advice,” she said.

Evelyn remembers a patient calling to say she had cellulitis in her leg and hoped Evelyn could help him get hospital treatment or medicine. Cellulitis is a serious bacterial infection that can be very dangerous if left untreated. Evelyn made a video call with the other party. After observation, she judged that the other party could take antibiotics for treatment, and helped the other party to obtain effective and convenient medicines in the Internet hospital.

On the 25th, Evelyn received a call. The other party said that she had just realized that she was a week pregnant, and her left side of the stomach began to hurt and had a fever. The other party is very worried about their physical condition, especially fear of ectopic pregnancy. Evelyn tried her best to soothe the other party’s emotions, inquired about the other party’s symptoms in detail, and suggested and helped her to go to the hospital for further examination. The next day, the girl got an ultrasound at a hospital.

During the lockdown period, when Evelyn passed a free video consultation , a screenshot of a video sent to her by a consultant.

The most dangerous is a patient with a heart rhythm problem. Evelyn recalled that the patient was in high levels of panic and distress and didn’t know what medication to take. Evelyn worked with the others to help him stabilize, and it wasn’t until a few hours later that the other’s condition stabilized.

Evelyn said that she received an average of 2-5 calls for help a day, and there were many people asking for help on WeChat, including neighbors in the community and strangers they met for the first time , both Chinese and foreigners. During the interview, she suddenly “lost contact” and didn’t reply until more than an hour later that she had received a call for help and had to interrupt the interview.

“It’s an honor to be able to use what I’ve learned and my passion to offer a little help to others during these special times,” Evelyn said humbly. .

Evelyn was interviewed by the domestic CCMTV clinical channel.

Feel as a good neighbor in China

Similar to many foreigners in Shanghai, Evelynn is not yet able to switch to the Internet to grab food, especially when she still needs to teach remotely and provide free clinics Down. Therefore, despite the adequate stocking up front, her refrigerator was gradually empty.

But fortunately, she still has her own good Chinese neighbors.

“My neighbors know that I only eat fruits and vegetables and like to drink Diet Coke. So when they find a group buy of these foods, they will send the link directly to Me, it saves me a lot of time and energy,” Evelyn said.

Neighborhoods will communicate with each other. Evelyn said the neighbors will give her lots of carrots and cabbage, which are vegetables she likes very much. Evelyn will distribute the apples and oranges she has stockpiled all year round to her neighbors, and fresh fruit is also valuable at the moment.

Not long ago, the water pipe in Evelyn’s apartment building burst, and a plumber could not be found for a while. At that time, thanks to a neighbor who led the team, everyone worked together to repair the pipeline.

The security guards in the community also moved Evelyn very much. “They actually live in the building and the conditions are not good, but they are still helping us every day, from nucleic acid testing to moving supplies…”

“In fact, the spirit of collectivism is one of the important reasons why I think of Shanghai as a writer.” Evelyn said, Life Foreigners here should understand China and help each other, especially when going through the test as a group.

Evelyn said that as a doctor, I hope both Chinese and foreigners living in Shanghai can realize that China and the world are an organism.

And as a Shanghai citizen, Evelyn said: “The burden we bear to overcome the disease will shape us and unite us forever. 2022 is indeed history. Sex, but it’s making us a family.”
