On the morning of April 25th, Xiao Yaping, a neurologist at Shanghai Oriental Hospital who had been busy all night, couldn’t hide his excitement and sent a circle of friends: Anti-epidemic, first aid while united, victory is in sight! Someone immediately replied: “External mining + emergency surgery seamlessly connected little expert!” It turned out that on the afternoon of April 24th, Xiao Yaping, who had just finished the morning external mining and was repairing, received the hospital’s emergency surgery arrangement and rushed to the meeting point as soon as possible. The hospital performed thrombectomy for patients with acute cerebral infarction, and the operation went well!
At 6:30 a.m. on April 24th, Xiao Yaping’s nuclear mining team set out for Beicai. Although everyone comes from different departments and different positions, they are already veterans on the battlefield of epidemic prevention. Since March, they have used their spare time to go to the front line countless times—entering communities and Xiajie towns to conduct nucleic acid tests for residents. In the morning, the team worked together to complete 3,000 nucleic acid sampling tasks.
Completely finished the morning sampling work, took off the sultry protective clothing, and got lunch at 2:30 pm. Xiao Yaping, who was eating, suddenly received an emergency notification from the department : “There is a stroke patient in the emergency department who may need thrombectomy! Please return to the hospital quickly for support.” Go quickly. With the assistance of the police on duty, he broke through the impact of the “short-term road closure” and returned in a police car.
It turned out that the patient, Mr. Xu, came to the emergency department of neurology of the South Hospital because of sudden right limb weakness and slurred speech. Arterial occlusion, the situation is highly dangerous, and the occluded blood vessel needs to be opened. Just when the family members were worried about whether to perform thrombectomy for acute cerebral infarction, Mr. Xu’s symptoms worsened again – his consciousness became blurred, he could not speak, and his right limb could not move at all!

When Xiao Yaping arrived, the neurology partner was giving the patient dual anti-platelet aggregation therapy, and the preoperative preparation was in progress. Without a moment’s delay, at 3:00 pm, Xiao Yaping performed the operation and cooperated with the team, and the operation officially started! Intraoperative angiography showed that the patient’s left internal carotid artery was severely stenotic, and the thrombus was occluded. Interventional surgery in the fragile and curved cerebral blood vessels requires more delicate craftsmanship like embroidery, and a more cautious attitude than embroidery- Every step must be meticulous and accurate, and no mistakes can be made. Xiao Yaping took several thrombi, implanted stents for stenotic blood vessels, and reconstructed blood vessels. The surgical team cooperated skillfully. Everyone was careful and done in one go, and the blocked blood vessels finally had smooth blood supply! The operation ended successfully at 8 pm, and the patient, Mr. Xu, was immediately transferred to the neurology intensive care unit.
But the day’s work was not over yet. The emergency call came again at 11 o’clock at night, and another emergency patient with cerebral infarction needed interventional treatment. Xiao Yaping “went into battle” again… wait until Xiao Yaping successfully completed the operation. It was already the early morning of the 25th. From one early morning to another early morning, Xiao Yaping couldn’t hide his exhaustion, but his full sense of accomplishment inspired him to send out this special circle of friends.
“As doctors, we do our best on every battlefield.” Xiao Yaping sighed with a smile that he “had the surgery and the nucleic acid collected”. Although Xiao Yaping and the neurology team of Dongfang Hospital are just an ordinary epitome of the front line of the anti-epidemic, “as medical workers, we have a responsibility”, which is the insistence of every fighting medical staff.
