Expert response: Why is the proportion of positive infections found in risk groups in Shanghai higher?

At 10:00 am on March 30, Shanghai held a press conference on epidemic prevention and control. Ren Juping, the second-level inspector, Wu Huanyu, deputy director of the Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and Wu Yingen, a tenured professor of Longhua Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, introduced the latest situation of epidemic prevention and control in the city.

In recent case reports, the proportion of positive infected persons found in risk groups has increased. Why is this?

Wu Huanyu, deputy director of the Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention, introduced that the first is related to the characteristics of virus transmission. The Omicron variant strain is highly contagious, spreads quickly, and has strong concealment. The most recent positive infections reported in this city are the Omicron variant strain. The Omicron strain BA.1 spreads faster than Delta strains increased by more than 70%, and BA.2 spread more than 60% faster than BA.1.

“We expanded the scope of screening of at-risk groups during the investigation and disposal of confirmed cases and asymptomatic infections, and found more positive infections in such groups. In addition, through slicing and grid screening, we found that the epidemic situation in this city has two characteristics of regional aggregation and city-wide sporadic coexistence, and most of the infected people found are asymptomatic infected people or mild cases.”

Therefore, further strengthening of screening for clusters of epidemic transmission chains, key places and key occupational groups has also increased the detection rate among at-risk groups.

The Shanghai Municipal Health Commission announced this morning (30th): From 0 to 24:00 on March 29, 2022, 326 new local confirmed cases of new coronary pneumonia and no new cases of new coronary pneumonia were added in Shanghai. There were 5,656 cases of symptomatic infection, of which 18 confirmed cases were the results of previously asymptomatic infections, 17 confirmed cases and 5,131 asymptomatic infections were found in isolation and control, and the rest were found in the investigation of relevant risk groups. There were 3 new confirmed cases of imported new coronary pneumonia and 2 asymptomatic infections, all of which were found in closed-loop control.
