Xinjiang Net News (all media reporter Jiang Binwei of Urumqi Evening News) After breakfast, the intern forest farm manager of Xinjiang Agricultural University Zhang Guolin and the forest ranger Zhu Mahali rode into the mountain again… This is the most common scene in their daily work.

Cold and summer come and go, day after day. Thousands of ecological forest rangers defend the green homeland with practical actions, and write “the sky is bluer, the water is clearer, the mountains are greener” with responsibility and waiting.

Departure with the sound of wild ducks

The Toutun River behind the forest farm is running endlessly. On the clear and clear water, a group of wild ducks occasionally made a “quack” sound, wandering around, which was very pleasant.

In the morning light, Zhang Guolin’s complexion looked even darker and redder. He has been waiting here since he came to the forest farm after graduating in July 1986. The wind and frost of the years carved deep imprints on his face.

In all, Zhang Guolin is the 12th college student to work in the forest farm. At that time, due to the harsh environment, only Zhang Guolin and three forestry technicians were left in the forest farm. Unconsciously, Zhang Guolin has been with this mountain forest for 36 years.

The forest farm is located in the south of Urumqi City, north of Tianger Peak, upstream of Toutun River, 100 kilometers away from the urban area, in the Tianshan Mountains In the middle section of the Zhongshan Belt, the intact original spruce forest type and the natural vertical band spectrum of mountain vegetation are preserved in the forest area, which is a typical representative of the mountain forest ecosystem in the Tianshan Mountains.

It’s another year of green mountains and forests. All kinds of lush trees are tall and strong, and all kinds of wild flowers under the trees are mixed in the wild grass, full of vitality.

Zhang Guolin pointed to several small pits on the ground and said, “This is what the wild boar arched when it came to eat weeds in the dead of night.” In the eyes, the ecology of this mountain forest is improving day by day, and the biggest change is that there are more wild animals. During the recent period of time, the school teacher led the students to the forest farm for an internship. When they went to the nearby toilet at night, they had to shout first to avoid encountering wild boars.

A “living map” of this forest area

Although the forest farm is equipped with special vehicles, Zhang Guolin and the others prefer to ride horses or motorcycles. Zhang Guolin’s explanation is that “there are too many ridges and ridges, and some roads are muddy roads, which are slippery and difficult to drive.”

The trainee forest farm is long from east to west It is about 17 kilometers long, about 38 kilometers long from north to south, and 55 kilometers of forest roads. There are four full-time forest rangers in the forest farm. They act separately every day and measure the forest with their footsteps. As the field manager, Zhang Guolin not only pays attention to production and patrols mountains and forests, but also cooperates with hundreds of teachers and students from the school to do scientific research projects here in summer.

This forest farm used to belong to Xiaoquzi Forest Farm in Urumqi County. In January 1960, 9 forest classes of Xiaoquzi Forest Farm were placed under Xinjiang Agricultural University to undertake the tasks of forestry ecological construction, protection of forest resources in the jurisdiction and promotion of forestry development, as well as the tasks of teaching, scientific research, and internships for teachers and students of the school. Hence the name. In August 2021, the forest farm was named “Tiangeer Campus of Xinjiang Agricultural University”.

Time flies by. In the past 36 years, Zhang Guolin has traveled all over the valleys and ridges of the forest farm. He knows every ravine and every piece of woodland here, and is known as the “living map” of the forest area.

Call on everyone to keep the green home together

“Now everyone’s awareness of environmental protection has increased, but there are a lot of tourists traveling by car in summer. Some tourists will secretly make fires and barbecues. The temperature is high in summer, which makes people worry about fires. We can only persuade them to put out fires and distribute publicity materials. .” Zhang Guolin said.

Zhang Guolin realized that the ecological protection awareness of tourists and herdsmen must be improved in order to better protect the ecology of this mountain forest. Distribute information to tourists and pastoralists. Take environmental protection materials wherever you go. Today, under his leadership, the surrounding herdsmen’s awareness of ecological protection has been significantly enhanced, and many of them have become voluntary volunteers for forest protection.

“The key to forest protection is to put the word ‘prevention’ in the first place. If the fire prevention work is done well, the forest farm will be safe.” Zhang Guolin said .

Since the national implementation of the natural forest protection project in 2000, the practice forest farm has completed or exceeded the forest protection and fire prevention and various Engineering construction tasks. Up to now, the practice forest farm has completed 633.3 hectares of artificial afforestation, 1,322.7 hectares of closed mountains for forest cultivation, and 4,333.3 hectares of forest tending. Forest management and protection stations and institutes have been built one after another, and a relatively complete system network of forest and grass fire prevention and natural forest management and protection in mountainous areas has been initially formed. There has been no fire alarm in the past 62 years.

Xu Xiaowei, Secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Forestry and Landscape Architecture, Xinjiang Agricultural University, said that thousands of undergraduates and postgraduates have conducted practice and experiments in the forest farm. A large number of forestry scientific and technological talents have been trained, and more than 50 key projects of the state, autonomous region and forestry and grassland departments have been implemented here. The protection and restoration of mountain forest ecosystems provide strong support.

Looking far into the distance, the mountains and forests are lush. Zhang Guolin’s tone was firm: “Lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets. I can’t live without this mountain and forest. As long as my body can persevere, I want to stay for a few more years.”
