A fundus photo can reflect the health of the human body, but many people know very little about it. June 6 is National Eye Care Day. Experts pointed out that some myopic patients, diabetic retinopathy patients, and hypertensive patients neglected fundus examinations and delayed disease treatment. The health concept of “a picture of the fundus, the disease is known early” needs to be popularized urgently.
Luo Jing, director of the Ophthalmology Teaching and Research Office of the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University and chairman of the Hunan Fundus Specialized Disease Alliance, introduced that if the human eye is compared to a camera, the fundus of the eye is equivalent to the film of the camera. If there is a problem with the fundus, it will lead to decreased vision, visual distortion, visual field defects and even blindness.
Luo Jing said that by taking pictures of the patient’s fundus, doctors can see the patient’s retina, optic nerve, macula, fundus blood vessels, etc., reflecting the corresponding disease. In addition to ophthalmic diseases, hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular, endocrine and other diseases can also cause retinal changes. These patients have no abnormal sensations in the early stage of the disease, and fundus examination can provide doctors with diagnostic clues.

Hou Dianhao, an ophthalmologist at the Second Xiangya Hospital, said that diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, macular degeneration, high myopia and other diseases can cause blindness, and these diseases can be detected and treated early through fundus photography. Among them, the incidence of diabetic retinopathy is high, and its early diagnosis and early treatment can reduce the risk of blindness. Regular fundus examinations are necessary for diabetic patients. Once retinopathy is found, retinal photocoagulation and vitreous surgery can be performed to avoid severe vision loss.
Luo Jing told reporters that the fundus of hypertensive patients in the early stage of the disease is often normal and can be maintained for a long time, but when the patient’s blood pressure continues to increase, it can cause systemic arteriosclerosis Hypertensive retinopathy. The older the patient and the longer the duration of hypertension, the higher the incidence. Many hypertensive patients lack a correct understanding of fundus changes, often miss the best time for treatment, and cause irreparable damage to their vision.
Experts remind that for young people, it is necessary to conduct fundus examination scientifically. Adolescent myopia is a common eye disease, but many people do not know that myopia, especially high myopia, can cause fundus lesions. Patients may develop high myopia retinopathy, macular neovascularization, and retinal detachment, resulting in sharp decline in vision or even blindness.
Luo Jing reminded that key groups such as diabetic patients, myopic patients, hypertension patients, and hyperlipidemia patients need regular fundus examinations. Once the “clues” of the disease are found, scientific intervention and treatment measures should be taken as soon as possible , to avoid visual impairment. (Reporter Shuai Cai)
