On May 30, the National Health and Medical Commission held a press conference to introduce the progress of maternal and child health work since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China about the situation. Regarding the current coverage of the “two cancer screenings” that are closely related to women, Wang Linhong, chairman of the Women’s Health Branch of the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association and chief chronic disease expert of the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention, introduced that as of 2020, the two cancer screening work has covered nearly 2,600 people. A total of 130 million free cervical cancer screenings and 64 million free breast cancer screenings were carried out in all counties and cities. Through early screening, early diagnosis and early intervention, many sick women can receive timely assistance.

Wang Linhong said that cervical cancer and breast cancer are two major malignant tumors affecting women’s health, and the state has always attached great importance to the screening of these two cancers. Since 2009, the state has included two cancer screenings in major public health service projects, providing free screening for rural women. In order to further improve the coverage of two cancer screenings, two cancer screenings have been included in basic public health services since 2019.

In 2021, the National Health and Medical Commission released the “Working Plan for Cervical Cancer Screening” and “Working Plan for Breast Cancer Screening”. More accurate and efficient screening methods should be applied, and the quality control of each link of screening should be strengthened, so that more and more urban and rural women, especially rural and urban low-income women, can enjoy high-quality screening services.

Wang Linhong pointed out that in order to further respond to the global strategy of promoting cervical cancer elimination proposed by the World Health Organization, in recent years, various regions have also been actively exploring effective models of comprehensive cervical cancer prevention and control, and many regions have included the screening of two cancers in the It has carried out government livelihood projects and explored the construction of a closed-loop management model for the whole chain of cervical cancer prevention and treatment.

In the next step, we will further promote the implementation of the two-level and three-level prevention and control measures, and improve the service capabilities of the whole process of prevention, screening, diagnosis and treatment. At the same time, it also calls on the majority of women to raise their awareness of cervical cancer and breast cancer screening, actively participate in the two cancer screenings, and be the first responsible person for their own health.
