After 30 years, the skin “old ulcer” has turned cancerous

Changjiang Daily, Wuhan Client, June 14th When I was young, my burns left scars, which often ruptured. After more than 30 years, it turned into skin cancer. The doctor reminds that skin ulcers that are “not well managed” are at great risk, and must be actively treated for early healing.

Ms. Wang is 56 years old and lives in cities around Wuhan. When she was in her 20s, her right leg was burned. After treatment, a large scar was left on her right calf, which often ruptured. After a long illness, she became a “good doctor”. Every time Ms. Wang changed her medicine at home, the ulcers healed in a few days, and she didn’t care much.

Last year, my skin broke again, but this time it didn’t get better after the dressing change. Instead, the situation became more and more serious, with running water, pain, odor, etc., which seriously affected my life. Not long ago, Ms. Wang rushed to the Shouyi District of Wuhan Third Hospital to see a doctor.

The second orthopaedic doctor who treated her, Zhou Yanbo, introduced that Ms. Wang’s right calf had a large area of scar ulceration, and the knee joint could not be straightened. Considering that the ulcer has existed for more than 30 years, the pathological examination of the ulcer tissue was performed first, and the result was diagnosed as well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma.

“Chronic skin ulcers have the risk of cancer, so you should pay more attention.” Zhou Yan introduced that skin and soft tissue defects caused by burns and scalds, if not healed for more than two weeks, are chronic skin ulcers. Long-term non-healing of ulcers, frequent irritation, infection and other factors may cause skin cancer. The scars on Ms. Wang’s legs are large and the blood supply is poor. The usual activities will cause the scar tissue to be stretched and stimulated. The ulcers will not heal for a long time, which will lead to continuous inflammatory stimulation. In addition, the skin of the legs is easily rubbed and collided. These factors may be related to the her cancer.

Afterwards, the doctor performed surgery to remove the lesion and surrounding skin tissue for Ms. Wang, and performed skin grafting on her. Next, Ms. Wang will continue to do radiotherapy.

Zhou Yanyan reminded that when encountering chronic skin ulcers that do not heal for a long time, some people will think that this is a small problem, and some people think that “if it can’t be cured, just ignore it”, which will leave risks. Chronic ulcers not only have the risk of cancer, but also may lead to serious infections such as sepsis caused by toxins entering the blood; (Reporter Wang Chunlan of Changjiang Daily, correspondent Jiang Hongying and Chen Shu)
