Talking about this topic is also a small episode during a teaching process a few days ago. At that time, an intern student asked me: Teacher, what is the drip speed? I see that the instructions say “100ml per hour”, how did you calculate it.
At the time, I was about to blurt out 20 drops a milliliter. However, I suddenly feel that this is not rigorous. In memory, there seems to be an infusion set with 15 drops per milliliter.

Seeing other people’s professional introduction, I felt a little ashamed: I have never been serious, it turns out that there are more than these two algorithms.
The commonly used infusion sets have three types of drop coefficients: 10, 15, and 20. A concept is involved here, and the drop coefficient. The number of drops required per milliliter of solution is the drop coefficient of the infusion set, which is generally recorded on the outer packaging of the infusion set.
For example: If a patient needs an infusion of 200ml within 1 hour, and it is known that the equivalent number of drops per ml is 15 drops, how many drops per minute are there?
At this point, we can take the number of milliliters entered per hour 200x the equivalent drops per milliliter 15, and divide by 60, the result is 50. Well, the answer is 50 drops. The next step is to hold the watch and look it up for a minute. Clinically, most of them are checked for half a minute and then multiplied by 2.
With the correct answer, I returned to the surgery room calmly. After talking to her in a straight-forward manner, she could clearly feel her adoring expression.
At that time, I thought to myself: Today’s students have not developed the habit of studying, nor do they know how to study. Take your time, do it, do it till you learn.
Suddenly, I found an infusion set, and the bag did clearly say 20 drops = 1ml±0.1ml.
In order to give her more knowledge, I gave her some basic knowledge by the way. For example, the influencing factors of infusion, the infusion speed of different drugs may be different. This is not only related to the thickness of the needle, but also to the physical and chemical properties of the liquid medicine. Secondly, it is related to the height of the liquid medicine and the blood vessels of the patient. When other factors remain unchanged, due to the frequent need to replace drugs during anesthesia, attention should be paid to the speed of adjustment of one drug. Never, do not adjust the liquid from start to finish.
