There is still a drop of medicine on the tip of the insulin needle, and sometimes on the skin, what is going on? How to avoid it?

When nurses inject insulin to patients in the ward, patients often ask: Why is there still a drop of medicine on the needle tip after I inject insulin?

Today we will talk in detail about the leakage of insulin injection.

What is an insulin leak after injection?

Leakage: A fluid leak occurs when any of the following occurs:

< span>(1) After the needle was withdrawn, a complete drop of liquid appeared on the needle tip, and the liquid bead was spherical and full;

(2) The needle was withdrawn Half a drop of liquid appeared on the back needle tip, which was only limited to the bevel of the needle tip, and the liquid droplet was not full; The phenomenon of drug solution extravasation occurs.

No leakage: After the injection is completed, the needle and skin are free of liquid medicine.

Two Reasons for Insulin Leaks

1. Insufficient residence time or excessive dose after injection: After insulin injection, the recovery process of the rubber piston will take a certain amount of time. At the same time, the needle is thinner, and the time it takes for the liquid to be injected into the body will be shorter. Prolonged, if the residence time is not enough, or the dose is too large, it is easy to cause insulin leakage with the needle, resulting in inaccurate injection dose and waste of liquid medicine.

2. If the needle is not removed in time after insulin injection: When the outside temperature changes (from cold to heat), droplets will leak from the tip of the needle.

4 Ways to Improve Insulin Leakage

1 .After injection, hold for at least 10 seconds before pulling out

Injecting insulin allows the needle to stay in the body for a period of time, at least 10 seconds. If the dose of insulin injected is relatively large, the dwell time will be extended to 20 seconds.

2. Rotate injection sites

< span>The leakage of different parts is different, and the leakage rate from low to high is as follows:abdomen, diabetic patients prefer the abdomen as the injection site when injecting insulin. They can rotate the injection in equal parts of the abdomen, and then rotate to other sites according to the situation.

3. Rotation method

After the injection, stay for 10 seconds, rotate 360° with the insulin pen, dislocate the skin and seal the eye of the needle, so that the liquid flowing from the needle can be removed Locks under the skin to reduce leakage.

4. Reasonable selection of needles

Insulin pens come in different needles, long or short, wide or narrow. To prevent fluid leakage, try to choose a needle with a slightly wider inner diameter. If the needle is too thin, it is easy to leak fluid.

But you can’t choose a needle with a too wide inner diameter, which will cause pain during injection. It is recommended to choose thin-walled or ultra-thin-walled needles Needle.

Is there any leakage when you inject insulin?
