Can hypothyroidism eat kelp?

It’s okay to eat, but in moderation.

Hypothyroidism stands for hypothyroidism and can be caused by many causes.

In the past, the main cause of hypothyroidism was iodine deficiency in the living environment. Now this problem has been basically solved by adding iodine to table salt. At present, the main causes of hypothyroidism are autoimmune thyroid disease caused by immune dysfunction, iodine-131 treatment, and total or near-total thyroidectomy.

For hypothyroidism caused by insufficient iodine intake, patients can supplement iodine through iodized salt, iodized drinking water, iodine-containing drugs, and iodine-fortified foods. An appropriate amount of kelp and seaweed can also be used to supplement iodine, but the dose is difficult to grasp and the curative effect is not stable enough.

For hypothyroidism caused by other common causes, it is recommended to take appropriate iodine intake, and should not be deficient in iodine, nor should it be eaten too much. The relevant intake recommendations for different age groups are shown in the table below (EAR: average requirement; RNI: recommended intake; UL: tolerable maximum intake).

Take 5 g of iodized salt per person per day as an example, 80-100 μg of iodine can be obtained from iodized salt every day, plus the iodine intake from other foods, basically The recommended iodine intake of 120 μg per day can be met. Eat some kelp in moderation, or other high-iodine seafood such as seaweed and mussels, and it will not exceed the tolerable maximum intake. The iodine content of common seafood is shown in the figure below:

The consumption of high-iodine seafood such as kelp must not be too much, otherwise it will also lead to hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism due to excessive iodine intake. Hypothyroidism caused by excessive iodine intake, until the thyroid function returns to normal, it is recommended not to eat high-iodine seafood.
