Free door-to-door access to the “Life Channel” more than 700 times This team traveled all over Minhang to provide PICC maintenance services

“This is the 7th time to maintain the venous access for me. Only the cost of the consumables is charged, and no service fee is charged. I am really grateful.” Aunt He from the village was overwhelmed with emotion.

Since the outbreak of the local epidemic, the “Xiaofeiyan Jingyu Nursing Team” from Minhang Branch of Fudan University Cancer Hospital (Minhang District Cancer Hospital) has crossed both sides of the Huangpu River and traveled almost all over the 14 streets and towns (industrial areas) under its jurisdiction, free of charge Door-to-door access for patients was opened 745 times, of which 80% of patients were not placed in the hospital.

According to reports, chemotherapy patients who carry intravenous access (PICC) for a long time do not carry out regular maintenance once a week, which will lead to blockage of the indwelling catheter, infection, etc. In severe cases, the use of the catheter and the treatment of the disease will be affected. On March 14, Minhang District Cancer Hospital proposed the initiative to provide door-to-door PICC maintenance services, providing door-to-door maintenance services for residents who need venous access maintenance in closed and controlled communities in the district, and maintaining the “last mile” of patients’ life channels.

Subsequently, the “Xiao Feiyan Static Therapy and Nursing Team” was quickly established. Every day, a special person was responsible for the handling of the task list and provided emergency PICC door-to-door service. The team consists of 10 nurses with experience in maintaining venous access, including many nurses who have maintained PICCs for chemotherapy patients during the 2020 epidemic.

Aunt Fang, who lives in Pujin Street, is one of the beneficiaries. After many setbacks, nurse Wu Yongxia finally came to her house. While maintaining the PICC for her, her daughter-in-law, who was standing by the side, said, “When the epidemic started, we thought about going to your hospital for maintenance, but it was inconvenient to travel. Later, I heard that I could come to the door. Maintenance, I quickly applied to the neighborhood committee, and the neighborhood committee reported it to the community health service center, and it was connected to the community health service center. It is really convenient for us to be able to come to the door.”

According to the appointment information, the head nurse Jiang Huiping came to the patient’s house, Mr. Zhang. He had lost his voice and could only communicate by hand gestures. After the maintenance, Jiang Huiping reminded as she eliminated: “Next time, I can ask my family to help you make an appointment in advance. If you have any questions, please contact us in time.” Jiang Huiping was one of the first nurses to participate in the PICC door-to-door service, completing 10 to 30 orders each time. The orders vary, with a maximum of 35 orders, from 6:00 in the morning to 9:00 in the evening.

From April 13th, Minhang District Cancer Hospital has also dispatched 3 medical staff to the designated hospitals for the treatment of new coronary pneumonia in the area, and opened a temporary maintenance point for PICC care for patients with new coronavirus infection, providing patients with venous access maintenance services.

“PICC is the ‘lifeline’ for the treatment of chemotherapy patients’ diseases, and it is also the ‘life pathway’ for the patients. We must be both qualified ‘road repairers’ and warm ‘road maintainers’.” Minhang District Feng Liang, secretary of the General Party Branch of the Cancer Hospital, said.
