I’m hungry? uncertain!
Everyone should have had a time when their stomach “grumbles”, and it must be a little embarrassing at this time. do you know? Stomach “gurgling”, it may be hungry, or something else is going on in the stomach. At this time, it is not only embarrassing, but also may need to report to the doctor.
Why does my stomach “grow”?
Stomach “gurgling”, the academic name is bowel sounds. When the bowel moves, the gas and liquid in the bowel flow with it, which will produce intermittent grunting or gas passing water, usually about 4-5 times per minute. Bowel sounds are generally low and gentle, and are difficult to hear. Once the bowel sounds are too loud, it will produce “embarrassment” that everyone can hear.
The stomach here generally refers to the digestive tract of the abdomen, which is a continuous tube from the mouth to the anus, which is divided into the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine, and bowel sounds are the stomach sounds , produced when gas and liquid flow in the small and large intestines.
Grumbling stomach means hungry?
Yes in most cases. The emptying time of the stomach is about 4-6 hours. When the stomach is about to empty, the gastric juice is still secreted continuously, and the stomach will have an illusion that its peristalsis is not enough, and then it will contract more forcefully. This phenomenon is called “Hunger contractions”. However, there is less content in the stomach and more gas, and the violent contraction will squeeze the air into the intestines, resulting in a “gurgling” sound. At the same time, the signal of hunger contraction is transmitted to the brain, and the feeling of hunger occurs. So, most of the “cooing” is the stomach protesting, reminding us that it’s time to eat.
But sometimes the stomach growling stops after a while, and there is no hunger. This is because the hunger contractions are cyclical. In the hungry state, after the stomach contracts strongly for about half an hour, the muscles will be tired, and if you stop and rest for a while, you will naturally not feel hungry. Once you see the food, the stomach acid starts to secrete again, the stomach continues to contract strongly, and the stomach starts to “gumble” again. But in addition to the stomach reminding you that you are hungry, there are also the following situations where “cooing” will occur.
Unusual “cooing”, watch out for signs of illness
The following situations will not only cause the stomach to growl, but may also experience uncomfortable symptoms such as pain, bloating, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea and blood in the stool. Once it occurs, be vigilant!
1
Acute gastroenteritis
The number of bowel sounds increases, and the sound also increases. With the appearance of bowel sounds, I feel that the bowels in the stomach are moving. According to experts, this situation is more common in acute enteritis, bacillary dysentery and other frequent diarrhea diseases.
2
Indigestion
Exhaust hunger factors, and occasionally simple bowel sounds without other symptoms, mostly caused by indigestion. Excessive gas production in the gastrointestinal tract can lead to bowel sounds.
For example, some people who are lactose intolerant will be prone to belly and vomit as soon as they drink milk, and their stomach will make a relatively loud “gurgling” sound.
3
Intestinal obstruction
If the number of bowel sounds increases significantly, up to 10 times per minute, and the sound is loud and high-pitched, or even a clanging or metallic sound, it means that the bowel is not exhausted smoothly, and there may be bowel obstruction Case.
Acute and chronic intestinal obstruction is prone to symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting, inability to defecate, and may also lead to intestinal tissue spasm, paralysis, ischemia and even necrosis. Acute intestinal obstruction is a common acute abdomen in surgery. If acute complete strangulated intestinal obstruction occurs, the disease progresses rapidly and may be life-threatening.
4
Peritonitis
Decreased bowel sounds can also be a sign of illness. If only one bowel sound is heard in 1 minute or even less, it may indicate senile constipation, peritonitis, etc.
If the bowel sounds have not been heard for 3 to 5 minutes, and the abdomen is stimulated by tapping or scratching with fingers and still no bowel sounds are heard, it is said that the bowel sounds disappear, which is seen in paralytic Intestinal obstruction or acute peritonitis.
Stomach growls, occasionally once or twice, don’t worry, it’s just normal bowel sounds. If it occurs frequently, and the body will be accompanied by some discomfort, it should be taken seriously. It is not a simple problem, it may be a disease of the body, it is best to do an examination as soon as possible to reduce the damage to the body.
