Globally, what about nasopharyngeal cancer deaths?

About 50,000 people die from nasopharyngeal cancer every year in the world, and the mortality rate in less developed countries or regions is 4.5 times that of developed countries (regions).

Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, and Brunei are the 5 countries with the highest mortality rates for nasopharyngeal cancer[1].

In both men and women, mortality rates for nasopharyngeal cancer begin to increase rapidly after age 40, with the highest mortality rate among those over age 75.

I. my country’s nasopharyngeal cancer death data

According to the global nasopharyngeal cancer detection data released by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the incidence and mortality of nasopharyngeal cancer in my country are higher than the world average. .

Statistics from the National Cancer Center of China show that the estimated number of deaths from nasopharyngeal cancer in 2015 was 34,100 [2]. The 5-year relative survival rate is only 43.8% [3], and more than half of patients fail to live beyond 5 years.

However, the death rate of nasopharyngeal cancer is also related to the specific stage of the cancer. Stage I nasopharyngeal cancer is still in the early stage, and the 5-year survival rate exceeds 95%; The annual survival rate is about 87%, but the 5-year survival rate of patients with stage III and IV nasopharyngeal carcinoma drops sharply to about 30%.

A detailed analysis of the mortality data of nasopharyngeal cancer in my country shows that the mortality rate of males is significantly higher than that of females, and that of urban areas is slightly higher than that of rural areas. The mortality rate in South China is higher than that in other regions, and it is the lowest in North China [3].

The three provinces with the highest death rates were Guangxi, Guangdong and Hainan.

In terms of age groups, the mortality rate of nasopharyngeal cancer begins to rise rapidly in the population of 35-39 years old, reaching a peak at the age of 80-84 for men and a peak for women over the age of 85 .

As a result, elderly patients with nasopharyngeal cancer have a higher risk of death.
