Got a “stye”? – go find acupuncture

An overview

“Sty” refers to an eye disease that is a boil on the edge of the eyelid, shaped like a grain of wheat, red, swollen, itchy, and prone to pus rupture. . Also known as “eye of a needle”, “earth chancre”, “earth ulcer”, “stealing needle”. “The Origin of Diseases and Diseases of the Eyes” gives a brief overview of its symptoms, saying: “People who have the inner canthus of the eye suddenly form blisters, and pus develops within three to five days. It is called stealing needles.” . This disease is equivalent to hordeolum in Western medicine, also known as stye. Mainly caused by Staphylococcus aureus infection.

Two etiologies and pathogenesis

“On the Origin of Diseases, Eye Diseases, and Needle Eyes” ” said: “This is formed by the heat of the air between the canthus and the heat of the body fluid.” Therefore, the disease is often related to factors such as exogenous wind-heat, heat-toxin attack, or damp-heat in the spleen and stomach. The disease is located in the eyelid and is closely related to the bladder meridian of Foot Taiyang and the stomach meridian of Foot Yangming. Its basic pathogenesis is the accumulation of heat evil in the eyelids.

Three key points of syndrome differentiation

The main symptom is a small induration on the edge of the eyelid, red, swollen, painful and gradually enlarged , A few days later, a yellow pus point appeared at the top of the induration, and the pus flowed out spontaneously after the ulceration.

1. External attack of wind-heat: mostly in the upper eyelid, with initial onset of stye, mild itching, slight redness and swelling of local induration, obvious tenderness, or accompanied by headache and fever, and general discomfort. Red tongue, thin yellow coating, floating pulse.

2. Inflammation of heat poison: mostly in the lower eyelid, eyelid redness and swelling, large induration, burning pain, yellowish white pus, thirst like drinking, constipation and red urine. Red tongue, yellow or greasy coating, rapid pulse.

3. Damp-heat in the spleen and stomach: mostly in the lower eyelid, frequent styes, less redness and swelling, or persistent, accompanied by sticky and bad breath, abdominal distension and constipation. Red tongue, yellow and greasy coating, rapid pulse.

Treatment based on four syndrome differentiation

The disease is mainly caused by heat pathogens, and filiform needles are often used for treatment. It mainly focuses on local acupoints and points on the foot sun and foot yangming meridians.

[Treatment method]: clearing heat and detoxifying, reducing swelling and dissipating knots

[main acupoints]: Zanzhu, Taiyang, Lidui

[matching acupoints]: The external attack of wind and heat is matched with Fengchi and Shangyang; the flaming heat and poison are matched with Dazhui and Quchi; the damp-heat of the spleen and stomach is matched with the inner court and Yinlingquan.

[Fangyi]: Zanzhu is the acupoint of the foot sun meridian, which is located in the eye area with the temple, which is better for clearing the heat in the eye and dispersing the knot; Yangming accumulates heat, reduces swelling and disperses knots.

[Operation]: Regular acupuncture with filiform needles, using the purging method; Zanzhu, Taiyang, and Lidui can all be pricked and bleed; Zanzhu can penetrate the waist of the fish and the hollow of silk and bamboo.

Location of five acupoints

1. Save bamboo

[Location] : On face, in brow depression, forehead notch.

2. Sun

[Location]: On the head, between the brow and the outer canthus between, in a depression about a horizontal finger backward.

3. Li Dui

[Location]: On the toes, outside the second toe segment , 0.1 cun above the corner of the base of the toenail.

4. Wind Pool

[Location]: In the back of the neck, under the occiput, In the depression between the sternocleidomastoid muscle and the upper end of the trapezius muscle.

5. Shangyang

[Location]: On the finger, on the radial side of the distal end of the index finger, on the nail 0.1 inch above the side of the root angle.

6. Dazhui

[Location]: In the spinal area, under the spinous process of the 7th cervical vertebra In the depression, on the posterior midline.

7. Quchi

[Location]: In the elbow area, flex the elbow at a right angle, and connect with the lateral epicondyle of the humerus at the lateral end of the cubital crease at the midpoint of the line.

8. Inner court

[Location]: On the back of the foot, Between the 2nd and 3rd toes, between the red and white flesh behind the web edge.

9. Yinlingquan

[Location]: On the inner side of the calf, in the depression between the inferior border of the medial tibial condyle and the medial border of the tibia.

Six characteristic treatments

1. Light moxibustion method[1]: Take the light red rash or sensitive spots on both sides of the 1st to 7th thoracic vertebrae or near the scapula area. Dip a small amount of sesame oil with rushes and light it Quickly apply moxibustion on the rash or sensitive points, when it touches the skin, there will be a clear “pop” sound, and moxibustion 1 moxibustion on each spot, once a day. Note Before starting the fire, use soft tissue paper to absorb the oil slick on the rushes to prevent the oil droplets from burning the skin after the ignition.

2. Walnut glasses moxibustion[2]: Use the round walnut shell as the moxibustion partition, and bend the iron wire into The glasses are frame-shaped, and then wrapped with tape for heat insulation; and a moxa wire frame is fixed at the nose pad, which is extended horizontally forward and bent to the center of the eyes. Before applying moxibustion, put the walnut shell into the chrysanthemum liquid soaked in boiling water for 10-20 minutes. After taking it out, put the walnut shell hemisphere outward and put it on the eyeglass circle on the affected side for the patient to wear. Insert a 1-inch moxa stick on the moxibustion stand on the affected side, ignite the moxibustion, moxibustion once a day, and moxibustion for 2 stages each time. It is advisable to make the affected area feel warm; if it is too hot, the distance between the eyeglass frame and the eye can be adjusted, and attention should be paid to prevent moxa ash. fall on the face.

Seven examples of literature

“Review of Yao Letters Volume Four”: “This disease or Up and down the eyelids, a small nucleus is born, which is caused by phlegm in the spleen and stomach. The upper eyelid belongs to the spleen meridian, and the lower eyelid belongs to the stomach meridian. If it forms a small nucleus, it will be red and self-breaking, and it will heal without medicine. It is like a cup like a fist, and it will become a tumor. If the small nucleus is first formed, first use fine moxa such as corn to strengthen the patient, make the patient lie down on the couch and close their eyes, moxibustion with garlic slices for three or four strong, external general Put the plaster on it.”

Eight prevention and care

1. Develop a good eating habit, eat lightly, and do not overeat spicy, stimulating and fragrant products.

2. Acupuncture and moxibustion have obvious curative effect in the initial stage of the disease, but after the pus is formed, it is advisable to turn to the ophthalmology department to incision and drain the pus.

3. During the period from the beginning of the stye to the pus, do not squeeze the affected area with your hands to avoid the spread of sepsis.
