Xu Xun: There is a long way to go to comprehensively improve the diagnosis and treatment of fundus diseases in various regions

Recently, Xu Xun, Director of the National Eye Disease Clinical Research Center and Chief Physician of the Department of Ophthalmology of the First People’s Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University, visited the “14th Five-Year” National Eye Health Plan (2021-2025) launched by People’s Health. ” (hereinafter referred to as “Planning”) experts interpret a series of columns, and exchange and share the theme of “focusing on the prevention and treatment of fundus diseases and promoting the expansion and extension of high-quality medical resources in ophthalmology”.

The “Planning” proposes to rely on urban medical groups and county medical associations to guide the extension of appropriate medical technologies for eye disease prevention and treatment to the grassroots, promote the application of effective vision screening and fundus screening technologies at the grassroots level, and implement eye disease prevention and treatment. measure. In this regard, Xu Xun believes that it is urgent to do a good job in this work, improve the diagnosis and treatment and follow-up capabilities of grassroots hospitals, improve the diagnosis and treatment of fundus diseases in all regions of the country, and strengthen the training of professional talents. There is a shortage of specialist doctors engaged in the prevention and treatment of fundus diseases nationwide, and most of them are concentrated in the central and eastern regions, and the distribution of resources is uneven. At present, the problem of “difficulty” in diagnosis and treatment of patients with primary eye fundus diseases is common in remote areas.

Xu Xun believes that the basic health examination of patients’ eyes is more suitable for primary medical and health institutions. Strengthening the eye disease screening of the grassroots is the work that should be paid attention to during the “14th Five-Year Plan” period. In this regard, the National Eye Disease Clinical Research Center and Beijing Bethune Public Welfare Foundation jointly launched the “Guarding the Light – Bethune Bright Center Capacity Building and Improvement Project”, which aims to improve the medical service capabilities of the tertiary hospitals that join them, as well as counseling Subordinate hospitals consult and deal with intractable diseases. This work is currently progressing smoothly, and more and more hospitals are willing to sign up for the project practice. According to Xu Xun, ordinary people do not lack channels of knowledge sources, but lack the ability to identify authenticity. In this regard, the project has organized authoritative ophthalmology experts and formed a professional lecturer group to carry out a variety of activities to strengthen ophthalmology. Popular science propaganda to promote the scientific knowledge of fundus diseases deeply rooted in the hearts of the people.

Improving people’s awareness of eye health is of great significance to the early screening and diagnosis of fundus diseases. Xu Xun believes that the treatment of fundus diseases is long-term and may even be life-long. However, many domestic patients and even doctors are not aware of this problem. “In recent years, we have increased the popularization of fundus disease knowledge, and through the Bright Center project, we have called for more tertiary hospitals to join in to establish unified standards for screening, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up, so that patients can get it anytime, anywhere. Standard treatment.” Xu Xun said: “In strengthening the training of doctors, we have taken many measures, such as holding training courses, regular seminars, building a real case diagnosis platform, and some national advanced experience exchange activities, etc. To improve the diagnosis and treatment capabilities of ophthalmologists in our country for fundus diseases.”
