“Snoring” It is not uncommon. When a person is in a sleep state, the muscles relax and the respiratory tract narrows. When the airflow passes through the narrow part, a vortex is generated, causing vibrations, which is manifested as snoring. Many people even think that snoring means “sleeping incense”. Is this really the case?

March 21 is World Sleep Day, let’s talk about “snoring”.

Snoring in this way is not a sound sleep, but may also “suffocate”!

“The snoring is often irregular at night, ending with a burst of frequent and loud snoring for tens of seconds, then abruptly with a loud snoring and starting again…often You’ll be woken up, sweating profusely, with a horrible choking feeling…” If someone is “snoring” like this, beware – it could be Obstructive Sleep Apnea Hypopnea Syndrome (OSAHS).

The Third Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University (hereinafter referred to as “Guangzhou Third Hospital”), Lin Min, deputy chief physician of the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, introduced that sleep apnea syndrome (SleepApneaSyndrome, SAS) is a kind of Sleep disorder with cessation of breathing during sleep, refers to the occurrence of 30 or more apneas during 7 consecutive hours of sleep, with each airflow interruption for more than 10 seconds (including 10 seconds), or the average number of hypopnea per hour (disordered breathing index) More than 5 times, and cause the clinical syndrome of chronic hypoxemia and hypercapnia.

Ouyang Shunlin, chief physician of the Otolaryngology Department of the Third Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, introduced that sleep apnea syndrome can be divided into central type, obstructive type and mixed type, among which obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome ( OSAHS) is the most common.

Lin Min reminded that if you drink alcohol or take sedative and sleeping drugs before going to bed, it will further suppress the respiratory center.

Of course, not everyone who snores suffers from sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is snoring followed by silent breathing pauses, choking, or wheezing sounds. Patients with sleep apnea usually have the following symptoms:

Night snoring, breathing pauses, and choking

nocturia Increased, decreased libido

Morning headache, difficulty concentrating, memory loss

Daytime sleepiness, tiredness

Grumpy, irritable, insomnia

Severely fall asleep at work, even while eating or driving

Men have a higher incidence than women 5 times! There will also be a variety of complications

“Snoring is not a trivial matter!” Lin Min emphasized that if the above discomfort occurs, it is necessary to go to the respiratory medicine department or sleep specialist of a regular hospital in time. Doctors will make a clear diagnosis after systematic evaluation and improvement of sleep apnea test.

It is known that the incidence of obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome accounts for one-half to one-third of sleep disorders, and the prevalence rate of over 65 years old is as high as 20% to 40%, among which male patients five times that of female patients.

“Due to snoring during sleep at night, the human body is in a state of hypoxia, causing the cardiovascular center to be excited, resulting in increased blood pressure and increased heart rate, greatly increasing the incidence of angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, cerebral hemorrhage and cerebral infarction Ouyang Shunlin said, “Medical clinical studies have found that the incidence of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases is much higher in people who snorer for a long time than those who do not snore.”

He reminded that middle-aged men , obesity, smoking, drinking before going to bed, taking sedative and hypnotic drugs, oral and nasopharyngeal lesions, and patients with cardio-cerebral nervous system diseases are high-risk groups and high-risk groups of snoring.

Appropriate adjustment of sleep patterns can reduce symptoms

For patients diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome, it is necessary to quit smoking and alcohol as much as possible. Lose weight and control diet, adopt a favorable sleeping position, adjust the height of the pillow appropriately, and adopt a side sleeping position, which can reduce snoring.

In terms of treatment, there are two types of non-surgical treatment and surgical treatment. It is understood that non-surgical treatment includes non-invasive ventilator continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) ventilation (first-line treatment) and other treatments to improve symptoms, greatly improve the quality of life of patients, and avoid tragedies caused by sudden death or other serious complications.
