The 10-year-old girl accidentally fell to her waist while practicing dance, and her waist has been in pain since then. After going to the Pediatric Orthopedics Department of Qingdao Women’s and Children’s Hospital, it was found that the girl suffered from lumbar disc herniation caused by spinal trauma. The previous conservative treatment for half a year was not effective, so the pediatric orthopedic team decided to use surgery to solve the girl’s pain, and the girl’s low back pain symptoms were significantly relieved after surgery.

Six months ago, 10-year-old Lili (pseudonym) accidentally injured her waist while practicing dancing. Although the diagnosis and treatment in the local hospital have improved, the pain in the lumbosacral and hip joints is still there. This seriously affected Lili’s study and life, and even made her feel tired of studying. Following the advice of the local hospital doctor, the parents brought Lili to the Pediatric Orthopedics Clinic of Qingdao Women and Children’s Hospital.

“The child had a severe spinal curvature protection position when he visited the doctor, and the muscle strength of the right lower extremity was significantly weakened. Based on the results of lumbar magnetic resonance, we found that the 4th-5th intervertebral disc of the lumbar vertebra of the child was significantly oriented. Her right back was protruded, and it was judged that she suffered from lumbar disc herniation caused by spinal trauma.” Director Dong Zhen of the Department of Pediatric Orthopedics introduced.

Spine is an important “pillar and pillar” of the human body, known as the “second lifeline” of human beings, with multiple functions of load-bearing, shock absorption, protection and movement. Once there is a problem with the lumbar spine, it should be treated as soon as possible, otherwise it will affect the patient’s study and work. Lili has been undergoing conservative treatment for half a year, but the effect is not good. The pediatric orthopaedic team decided to use surgical treatment to solve her problem.

With the active cooperation of the operation center and the anesthesiology department, the pediatric orthopedics team adopted a minimally invasive surgery with a 4cm incision to reduce the damage to the physiological structure and stability of the lumbar spine. During the operation, the surgical team removed the protruding nucleus pulposus of the intervertebral disc to relieve the compression of the nerve root. After the operation, Lili’s lower extremity numbness disappeared immediately, and her low back pain was significantly relieved.

The doctor introduced that, like Lili, children with lumbar disc herniation often have a history of trauma. Children with lumbar injuries may have twisted and dislocated the vertebral bodies of the spine at that time, and the intervertebral discs may be compressed due to the injury, and lumbar intervertebral disc herniation may occur over time. In addition, heavy study load, long class hours, and prolonged sitting may lead to lumbar disc herniation.

So the doctor reminds: when the child has a waist injury, the lower back feels pain after coughing, sneezing, defecation, or after getting up in the morning, or there is a radiating leg pain from one side to the far side, accompanied by numbness, You should go to the regular hospital for treatment as soon as possible. In children with lumbar disc herniation, conservative treatment should be considered first, and surgery should be performed if conservative treatment fails. At the same time, bad living habits should be changed, such as standing and sitting for a long time; weight control, full warm-up before physical activities, and avoid sprains caused by strenuous activities.
