You should know that a person’s weight changes at any time during the day, ranging from 1-3 kg, usually the lightest in the morning and the heaviest in the evening.

And when you lose weight after exercising, it’s not fat burning, but the weight of water you sweat and lose during exercise. Once you drink more water, the weight will rebound.

There are many ways to measure body fat. The recognized “gold standard” is DEXA (Dual X-ray absorptiometry), which uses the principle that different tissues of the body have different absorption rates of X-rays to measure body fat. It is also the technique of choice for assessing bone mineral density [1].

However, the machines on which this technology relies are huge and expensive, and are generally only equipped in large hospitals or scientific research institutions. Therefore, this is not something that ordinary people can test whenever and wherever they want. They have to go to the hospital to register and pay for the test.

Body fat percentage is the ratio of body fat mass to body weight, including the sum of subcutaneous fat, visceral fat, intramuscular fat, etc. According to the World Health Organization, the body fat rate is ≥ 25% for men and ≥ 35% for women as the standard for excess body fat [2].

Excessive body fat content not only affects your health, but also affects the visual perception of your body.

Speaking of which, there are many uncertain factors in the actual use of home body fat scales, such as measurement methods, system algorithms, environmental temperature, humidity, and the human body’s eating and drinking conditions, all of which can be directly affect the final result.

And so far, there is a lack of mature technical guidelines, algorithms, standards and other guiding documents in China, and there are still some problems in production and registration for manufacturers that need to be regulated.

An evaluation agency compared the measurement results of 17 different brands of body fat scales with professional instruments, and found that there was a certain deviation in the measurement. For example, volunteers drink two bottles of water or hold a bucket of water for measurement, the body fat rate increases, and after going to the toilet, body fat decreases again. And when the test population is obese, the accuracy of the body fat scale will be relatively higher.

Therefore, the numbers measured by the home body fat scale can not be taken too seriously. If you really want to obtain body composition data, you can go to the hospital to register and use the hospital’s equipment to measure. If you don’t have that much time, you can weigh yourself at home and measure your waist circumference (adult male waist circumference ≥90cm, female waist circumference ≥85cm is obese) can be used as the basis for evaluation.
