What’s new|Public hospitalization fees have fallen, outpatient fees have risen, and private consultations have exploded

On September 28, the National Health and Medical Commission released two data on the national medical service situation and the cost of public hospitals above the second level from January to May 2022.

On the whole, private hospital admissions rebounded rapidly: From January to May, the total number of private hospital consultations reached 261 million, a year-on-year increase of 4.3%. During the same period, domestic public hospitals received a total of 1.357 billion patients, a year-on-year decrease of 0.8%.

Primary care is doing well. Data shows that the number of consultations in primary medical and health institutions nationwide was 858 million, a year-on-year increase of 2.7%, of which 476 million were received by township health centers, a year-on-year increase of 7.6%.

From the perspective of specific medical expenses, inpatient expenses in second- and third-level public hospitals showed a downward trend.

Data shows that the average hospitalization costs of secondary and tertiary public hospitals nationwide are 6,821.5 yuan and 14,016.9 yuan, respectively, 0.7% and 4.2% less than the same period last year. However, the average outpatient cost of tertiary public hospitals reached 359.4 yuan, a year-on-year increase of 2.5%.

In addition, the National Health and Medical Commission also made statistics on the discharge of patients: From January to May 2022, the number of hospital discharges nationwide reached 81.308 million, a year-on-year increase of 0.1%. Among them, 66.146 million people were discharged from public hospitals, a year-on-year decrease of 0.1%, and 15.162 million people were discharged from private hospitals, a year-on-year increase of 1.3%.
