In 2005, Guan Yi was hired as a professor at the University of Hong Kong and director of the State Key Laboratory of Emerging Infectious Diseases, the first state key laboratory established outside mainland China. At the beginning of 2020, pneumonia of unknown cause occurred in Wuhan. Guan Yi was one of the experts who went to Wuhan for investigation in the early stage of the epidemic.
