Every time after the college entrance examination or recruitment season, many young people choose to correct myopia through surgery and gain a “free horizon”. But surgery is not something you can do if you want to, and you have to master the indications before you can have happy results.

On the afternoon of September 24th, Guangzhou Panyu Purui Eye Hospital held the unveiling ceremony of “Baili Picking Doctors Famous Doctors Studio”. Four famous doctors who have worked in Zhongshan Ophthalmology Center for many years—Professors Liu Quan, Liu Bin, Liu Hongshan, and Zhu Shiping have made achievements in the fields of ophthalmology such as refraction, cataract, and corneal disease. “will help.

The youngest surgical patient is only 6 years old, an exceptional case

The number of myopia in my country has reached 400 million, and the prevalence rate is 33%. 90% of young people suffer from myopia, but only about 80 million people are really suitable for refractive surgery. How is this going? Professor Liu Quan, vice president of Pure Eye Group and chief expert in refractive surgery in the Greater Bay Area, explained in an interview that he has worked in Zhongshan Eye Center for more than 30 years and has treated many myopia patients who want to undergo surgery. For these patients, he must not only prescribe a detailed examination to determine whether they are suitable for surgery, but also fully communicate with them to see if they have a strong willingness to undergo surgery. “Surgical correction of myopia is the icing on the cake. If patients can fully accept wearing spectacles, I generally don’t recommend them to have surgery.” Professor Liu Quan said.

Science lecture of the day

Indications for surgical correction of myopia also include age 18 or older, myopia progression is stable, and the annual progression is less than 50 degrees. Setting the age dividing line of 18 also considers that the vision has stabilized after the age of 18. “But it’s not absolute. The youngest patient I’ve done is only 6 years old. She has myopia up to 600 degrees in one eye and amblyopia, but the other eye is not at all nearsighted, so she can’t wear glasses, even if she wears glasses. Afterwards, she was also very uncomfortable, unable to study and live normally, and myopia surgery was a help in the snow for her.”

The difference in vision between the two eyes is more beneficial

Another indication for myopia surgery is a refractive error of 200 degrees or more between the eyes. Professor Liu Quan explained that it is not that myopic patients with the same degree of myopia cannot have myopia surgery, but that patients with uneven myopia are prone to eye fatigue, even eye pain, headache and other discomfort. In the population, the benefit is greater after surgical correction.

Other indications include: no active disease in the eye, such as inflammation, severe dry eye, etc.; eye parameters meet the conditions for surgery, such as keratoconus, which is not suitable; systemic Disease without surgical limitations.

Don’t blindly expect a corrected visual acuity of 1.5 after surgery

Professor Quan Liu also added that surgery is not suitable for patients who have high expectations for postoperative vision correction results.

He explained that some patients expect their visual acuity to return to 1.5 after surgery, but there are many uncontrollable factors that may prevent them from achieving 1.5 visual acuity after surgery. For example, there will be individual differences in the healing of wounds with different physiques; in addition, the fineness of image resolution by the cerebral cortex of each person is also different. For these patients, they cannot achieve 1.5 vision even with glasses. According to Professor Liu Quan, according to the surgical cases he has handled for so many years, the vast majority of patients with vision correction after surgery reach 1.2. Purui Ophthalmology’s quality standard for myopia surgery implements the visual quality of the whole life cycle, the field of view of the whole visual scene, and the whole visual (distance, intermediate and near) effect.
