Not everyone is suitable for myopia surgery

Summer is the best time for children and teens to get vision correction and eye care. Many students want to do corrective surgery during the holidays, and some businesses seize the opportunity to launch a variety of myopia treatment products. On the People’s Complaint Platform, many parents who have used “vision protection products” left messages saying that they were “pitted” by the false and exaggerated propaganda of the merchants. So, can eye care stickers, eye creams, eye care instruments, acupoint massage instruments and other products really restore vision, reduce degrees, and cure true myopia as advertised by businesses? If accidentally deceived, how should consumers protect their rights?

Recently, in a series of interviews in the “Consumption Insights” column launched by People’s Daily Online and the China Consumers Association, the China Consumers Association is responsible for the topic of correcting eyesight for children. People and experts answered questions from netizens on the People’s Complaint Platform.

Not everyone is suitable for myopia surgery

The latest data from the Ministry of Education shows that in recent years, the overall incidence of myopia in my country has increased significantly, reaching 33%, which is 1.5% of the world average. times.

Zhao Yu, deputy director of the Consumer Guidance Department of the China Consumers Association, said that myopia is controllable and preventable, but not curable. In 2019, the “Notice on Further Regulating and Strengthening Supervision of Adolescent Myopia Correction” issued by six departments including the National Health Commission and the Market Supervision Bureau clearly pointed out that under the current medical technology conditions, myopia cannot be cured. If the pseudo-myopia is caused by overuse of the eyes and other reasons, go to a regular ophthalmic medical institution for examination in time, and it is possible to recover through scientific methods. If it has developed into true myopia, it can only be corrected by wearing glasses, including frame glasses, myopia surgery, etc.

Regarding myopia surgery, Zhai Changbin, director of the refractive surgery center of Beijing Tongren Hospital affiliated to Capital Medical University, said that although this surgery is safe and effective, it is not suitable for everyone.

He said, first of all, there is an age limit for myopia surgery, generally between 18 and 50 years old. Second, patients are required to have no eye diseases, such as keratitis, conjunctivitis, glaucoma, fundus diseases, etc., which are not suitable for myopia surgery. Also, there should be reasonable expectations for myopia surgery. All operations are risky. Doctors must evaluate patients before performing operations. Only patients who have relevant conditions can perform operations. According to statistics, due to various reasons, 2%-5% of patients may not be completely satisfied with the curative effect after myopia surgery. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully consider whether to perform myopia surgery.

Do this for daily eye protection

In daily life, how should you prevent myopia? Zhao Yu said that the key is to cultivate good eye habits, starting from an early age. Children from birth to 3 years old are the golden period of vision development. Avoid using electronic products as much as possible. 3-6 years old is a critical period for the development of eyes and visual functions. Parents should always pay attention to the development of children’s eyes and visual health.

At the same time, Zhao Yu said that it is necessary to learn to use the eyes scientifically and to use appropriate outdoor activities. Parents should guide their children to read and write in the correct posture and distance, keep using their eyes for no more than 40 minutes, and pay attention to the brightness of the surrounding environment. Nowadays, many children are taking online classes, and it is necessary to help children choose or use electronic products reasonably. Take a 10-minute break after using electronic products for 30-40 minutes. The younger you are, the shorter the continuous use of electronic products. If the child does not look at electronic products for the purpose of learning, it is recommended that the single use time should not exceed 15 minutes, and the cumulative time should not exceed 1 hour per day. Actively urge the child to engage in outdoor activities and physical exercise.

“It is recommended to maintain more than two hours of outdoor activities every day, or accumulate more than 14 hours of outdoor activities per week to cultivate children’s good living habits. If the child is short-sighted, increase the time for outdoor activities. In order to delay the progression of myopia, it is recommended to spend more than 3 hours of outdoor activities every day.” Zhao Yu said.

“There are two methods in medicine, one is OK mirror and the other is low-concentration atropine. It should be noted that it must be used under the guidance of a doctor, and cannot be used at will, otherwise it will not only fail to achieve For the purpose of correcting myopia, it may also cause other side effects.” Zhai Changbin said.
