The weather is very hot this year. After entering the autumn, the temperature is still hot and dry, so hydration has become a matter of great attention. Unexpectedly, however, some people have recently been admitted to the emergency room because of drinking too much water.

Recently, on a hot afternoon, Ms. Chen was unbearably thirsty and drank two bottles of cold water in one breath. After a while, she covered her stomach, her face was pale, and her abdominal pain was uncomfortable. Ms. Chen’s husband rushed her to the nearby Yuexiu Branch of Guangdong Maternal and Child Health Hospital for treatment.

After consultation, physical examination, and auxiliary examination, the emergency doctor ruled out severe acute abdomen in internal and external gynecology, and believed that Ms. Chen had “stomach cramps”. Therefore, an intramuscular injection of anisodamine was given to relieve spasm, and Ms. Chen’s abdominal pain was relieved.

Guangdong Maternal and Child Health Hospital Emergency Department Head Nurse Wang Xiaoqin explained that stomach cramps refer to stomach muscle twitching, usually manifested as upper abdominal pain, as well as a squeezing sensation in the stomach and abdomen, often accompanied by Have vomiting symptoms. The occurrence of stomach cramps is often related to factors such as constitution and diet.

Why does drinking water cause stomach cramps? Wang Xiaoqin said: “Most of it is because we don’t drink water correctly. When we are thirsty, the body’s water balance has already been out of balance, and some cells are already in a state of dehydration. At this time, drinking water is ‘passive drinking’.”

Wang Xiaoqin suggested that when you are thirsty, you should not drink a lot of water in one breath, and it should not exceed one-third of the physiological capacity of the human stomach (more than 500ml for adults). A large amount of water enters the stomach at one time, which not only easily stimulates and causes stomach cramps, affects digestive function, but also increases the burden on the heart and kidneys.

The correct way to drink water is to drink a glass of water (200ml of water) slowly. Children or the elderly can drink a glass of water twice (100ml each time) slowly. When drinking water with a slightly lower temperature, you can take the first sip of water in your mouth and swallow it slowly to make your mouth and body adapt to the water temperature, and then drink slowly in increments.

What if I have stomach cramps from drinking too much water? Wang Xiaoqin pointed out that at this time, the stomach muscles are strongly contracted and should be relieved with antispasmodic drugs, such as drotaverine hydrochloride, Fukean tablets, etc., and the acid-suppressing drug aluminum magnesium carbonate should be used to protect the gastric mucosa. For non-drug intervention, use a hot towel to compress the painful area, pay attention to prevent burns, and apply the heat for less than 30 minutes.

If there is still no relief, seek medical attention as soon as possible. It should be noted that if you are not sure about the cause of abdominal pain, you should go to the hospital for examination in time, and do not use analgesics at will, so as not to cover up the real condition.

What should I pay attention to in my diet after stomach cramps are relieved?

Stomach is the organ that stores food. Healthy and regular diet is necessary to nourish the stomach. At the same time, you should also pay attention to emotional well-being and adequate rest. The following points should be paid attention to in nourishing the stomach:

1. Choose foods that are light and easy to digest, non-irritating and suitable for temperature.

2. Avoid rough, fried, spicy, cold, overheated, greasy, sticky foods and beverages such as strong tea and coffee.

3. Fasting of rotten, stale and unclean food.

4. People with too much stomach acid should not eat foods that are too acid, such as vinegar, lemon, plum, hawthorn, etc.

5. Avoid cold and gas-producing foods, such as cold drinks, potatoes, sweet potatoes, taro, etc.

6. Eat in moderation, avoid overeating, ration regularly, and have a degree of hunger. Do not over-starve or overeating.
