Delta Hospital Shanghai: “The Delta Model” and “Sun’s Surgery” – The Speed and Power to Save Lives

Rescue Speed: Green Life Channel in Delta Mode

President Sun Lizhong, who has been with Delta Hotels for 6 years, once said proudly: “In Delta Hospital, the average time for emergency patients from arriving at the hospital to entering the operating room is no more than 1.5 hours.” (Delta Internal Statistics)

In 2016, in order to provide patients with a better medical experience, Professor Sun Lizhong, the inventor of “Sun’s operation”, came to Shanghai Delta Hospital to explore more possibilities for social medical services.

Shanghai Delta Hospital, as a non-public medical unit, although young, has made outstanding achievements in the diagnosis and treatment of major vascular surgical diseases, especially acute type A aortic dissection Emergency treatment, thoracoabdominal aortic surgery and complex and difficult aortic surgery and other fields.

In terms of emergency treatment procedures, thanks to the “Delta Model” created by Shanghai Delta Hospital, Shanghai Delta Hospital has introduced advanced foreign management models and combined with my country’s national conditions, from the disease Discussion, preoperative preparation, additional surgery, personnel deployment and other aspects create a “green life channel” to save patients’ lives.

In addition, Shanghai Delta Hospital also has very prominent features in the treatment of complex and difficult aortic diseases.

Strength: Prof. Sun Lizhong and “Sun’s Surgery”

In 2003, as a cardiovascular surgeon, Sun Lizhong of Fuwai Hospital in Beijing wondered every day how to do the surgery well. The isolation after the SARS epidemic was just right for him. Time for quiet thinking.

Dr. Sun Lizhong found that in the previous operation for aortic dissection, the artificial materials were easily discounted and twisted, the implantation was very difficult, the technique was difficult, and the effect was not good. For this reason, he drew on the concept of interventional therapy, developed stent artificial blood vessels and delivery devices, and invented the aortic arch replacement and stent elephant trunk surgery, which reduced the difficulty of the operation and improved the effect of the operation. “Sun’s operation” was born.

Also in 2003, a 20-year-old boy with extensive aortic aneurysm went to several major hospitals in China and could not be treated, and finally was admitted to Ward 10 of Fuwai Hospital, where the attending physician was Sun Lizhong . He applied the unique “arterial cannulation method” intercostal artery anastomosis technique and “segmental circulatory arrest important arterial reconstruction technique”.

This 12-hour operation saved the boy’s life and became another milestone in aortic surgery in China — the stage I total aortic replacement.

Exploration and Success: The Chinese Model of Aortic Diagnosis and Treatment Centered on “Sun’s Surgery”

The aorta is the largest artery in the human body, and once it occurs, it is dangerous and abnormal. It is estimated that there are 100,000 to 500,000 new cases of various types of aortic diseases in my country each year. More than 70% of aortic diseases are aortic dissection [1], and about 62% to 91% of patients with type A dissection die within a week of onset. [2], only surgery can save the patient’s life.

However, aortic surgery is difficult, involves many vital organs, and has high complications and mortality.

Sun’s operation: Treating type A aortic dissection, improving the protection of important organs and blood in aortic surgery, and reducing the operative mortality rate from 20.8% to less than 5%. The cavity closure rate increased from 40% to more than 95%, and the reoperation rate decreased from 30% to less than 10% [1]. At present, this procedure has been popularized and applied in South America and other countries [4], and it has become the standard procedure for the treatment of aortic dissection. [5]

In addition, the refined classification of aortic dissection in Chinese people created by Professor Sun Lizhong, aiming at the treatment strategies and norms, clinical experience, long-term efficacy and results of aortic dissection, has formed the diagnosis and treatment of aortic diseases. The Chinese model also has strong international influence.

According to Prof. Sun Lizhong, at the beginning of the 21st century, due to the complex surgical techniques for aortic dissection, the lack of popularization, the low overall level of the discipline, and the unbalanced development, the nationwide comprehensive treatment of aortic dissection was independently completed. There are no more than 20 medical centers, less than 5,000 operations are performed every year in the country, and the treatment methods and effects vary greatly [3].

After the invention of “Sun’s surgery”, Professor Sun Lizhong and his team are actively promoting this surgery. After unremitting efforts, “Sun’s operation” has been written into several cardiovascular surgery textbooks, becoming the embodiment of the overall high level of the aortic surgery team in my country and a symbol of reaching the world’s advanced level. “Sun’s operation” has also been reported at the National Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Annual Conference, the Houston Aortic Surgery Academic Conference, the European and Asian Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Annual Conferences, and published in Circulation and other journals.

Professor Sun Lizhong believes that this is the result of years of continuous promotion of Sun’s surgery, and it is also the success of the Chinese model of aortic disease diagnosis and treatment.

With such high-level experts as Professor Sun Lizhong, the inventor of “Sun’s Surgery”, coupled with the innovative concept of “Delta Model”, Shanghai Delta Hospital has also achieved very high Social acceptance, especially among patient groups.

Development: a long way to go

Nevertheless the invention of “Sun’s operation” or the speed of life saving under the “Delta model”, this is not the end. Professor Sun Lizhong pointed out that although my country has made great progress in the prevention and control, treatment, scientific research and technical application of macrovascular diseases, it still faces many challenges.

For example, in terms of materials, without good materials, the success rate of treatment will be low, and the problem of bleeding will be serious. Need to continue to strengthen the research and development of new materials.

For example, in terms of management, it will strengthen the refined management of the whole chain and the whole process to continuously improve the quality and safety of medical care, improve the homogeneity of medical services, and improve the satisfaction of patients with medical treatment.

For example, in terms of clinical technology, continuous improvement of thoracoabdominal aortic replacement surgery and total aortic replacement surgery is a particularly complex and difficult operation in aortic surgery, and it is a high level of the overall aortic surgery team. I hope that there is not only Sun’s surgery, but also more Zhang’s surgery and Wang’s surgery…

As the chairman-designate of the branch of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery of the Chinese Medical Association, Professor Sun Lizhong will continue to work with his peers to promote the development of cardiovascular surgery in my country to a higher level and promote more The hospital conducts cardiovascular surgery to promote more young doctors to join the cardiovascular surgery industry, so that more patients can be treated.

Shanghai Delta Hospital will also actively share its experience and models in the field of major vascular surgery in professional fields, in order to improve the overall level of major vascular surgery in my country and reduce regional differences Make a contribution.
