A new ‘monkey virus’ may spill over to humans
A little-known family of viruses has become endemic in wild African primates and has been found in some monkeys, according to a new study published Sept. 30 in the journal Cell. Caused deadly Ebola-like symptoms, it was ‘ready to spill’ to humans.
“This animal virus has found a way to invade human cells, reproduce itself and evade the body’s immune mechanisms. This is very rare,” the researchers said.
This study shows that a molecule or receptor called CD163 plays a key role in the biology of simian arteritis virus, allowing the virus to invade target cells. Researchers stress that another pandemic is not imminent and the public need not panic.
