Brazil Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga said on the 5th that after Brazil’s first monkeypox death occurred in Minas Gerais last week, the Brazilian Ministry of Health established an emergency Centre of Operations (COE) to monitor the monkeypox outbreak in Brazil.
The Brazilian government has announced the purchase of 50,000 doses of the vaccine, which will be provided to those who have been in contact with confirmed cases of monkeypox, as well as health professionals working on the front lines of monkeypox control and laboratories inoculation. In addition, Brazil will purchase the antiviral drug tecovirimat for the treatment of severe monkeypox patients.
As of now, the number of confirmed cases of monkeypox in Sao Paulo state has reached 1,404, ranking first in Brazil. It was followed by the state of Rio de Janeiro (200 cases), Minas Gerais (75 cases), Goias (38 cases), the Federal District where the capital Brasilia is located (37 cases), Barra. That state (36) and Rio Grande do Sul (18). In addition, Bahia, Pernambuco, Santa Catarina, Mato Grosso do Sul and Rio Grande do Norte have also reported confirmed cases.
According to Brazilian media reports, as of August 4, there have been more than 26,000 confirmed cases of monkeypox in 88 countries worldwide.
