The 57-year-old, David Bennett, underwent the procedure on January 7 at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, USA. According to reports, the pigs used in its transplants have been genetically modified to “knock out” a gene that causes human rejection, as well as a specific gene to prevent overgrowth of pig heart tissue implanted in humans.
The University of Maryland Medical Center said Bennett first visited the center in October last year, when he was confined to bed and relied on an extracorporeal life support system known as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). His condition is not suitable for a routine heart transplant. Before receiving the pig heart transplant, Bennett was fully informed of the risks of the transplant, an experimental procedure with unknown risks and benefits.
In the weeks following surgery, the transplanted heart in Bennett was functioning well and showed no signs of rejection, the center said. He lives with his family and receives physical therapy to help restore his strength. But Bennett’s condition started to deteriorate a few days ago. The hospital gave Bennett palliative care after it became clear that he had no hope of recovery. Bennett was still able to communicate with his family in the hours before his death.
Bennett’s surgeon, Bartley Griffiths, said Bennett fought the disease to the end. The surgery provided researchers with valuable information that could help doctors better perform transplants and help save future patients.
The researchers gained valuable information from Bennett’s surgery and plan to continue clinical trials in the future, said Mohammad Muhyiddin, professor of surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and director of the cardiac xenotransplantation program.
